I downloaded the disney jr app on my phone and turn the volume down, he doesn't get to watch tv much at home, so when we go out its like a special treat for him to watch disney jr. I also bring keys and a few baby books that he "reads to himself"

  • As soon as I sit down, I try to order an appetizer or meal for them, so they don't have to wait too long. I usually give them straws, cars, magna doodle, my phone if I am desperate. My kids like watching people and I try to take them out to family friendly restaurants and during 'down times' at restaurants.
  • Typically we also order something fairly quickly, and we find a space he/we can walk around.  So depending on the restaurant - carrying him around to look at pictures on the wall, or bringing him outside to walk around until the food is ready.

Something that might work?  The other day my son found my nesting doll measuring cups.  They're ceramic, so I was worried he was going to start acting like a toddler and you know, throw them?  But he was really interested in un-nesting them and then putting them back together.  He did it for a good 10 or so minutes until I told him we had to put them away and go to school.  I just got him a non-ceramic set of nesting dolls.  We're going on a plane tomorrow, so I'm going to whip those out and see if they keep him occupied on the plane, but if it works, then potentially they'd be good for restaurants too?

  • I find buffet restaurants good for LOs. You have built in opportunities to walk around which keeps LO entertained for a while, and the food is ready immediately.

Plus there's a huge range of food, so easy to find something for LO to eat, and they're family friendly so people are used to little kids.

  • We bring crayons or books and we will walk around with him if he's getting bored. Snacks or an appetizer help, as well.

He will also spend hours (okay, minutes) on stickers, stacking cups, or Mr. Potato head, and those are all relatively small toys that can be easily packed.

We hold LO and play at the table. We don't put him in the high chair til food comes. Like pps said, we order quickly.

  • I am currently working on a "quiet Book". It is a book made of felt that has several different pages with activities. I'm thinking this will help keep him very occupied!!

  • DD has a back pack for such occasions.  Now she's pretty good with nothing, but when eating out became a challenge she would enjoy mini playdoughs and I put together a little photo album with pictures of her friends and family.  We always bring the Leap Pad, but it's a last case option and we've only used it maybe once.
