Stay at Home Moms

What do you think of this idea?

I have an idea for a website where local SAHMs could network to trade occasional childcare. For instance if you have two kids you could find someone else with two kids and trade so maybe they watch your kids on Tuesday afternoon and you watch theirs on Friday afternoon. That way each mom gets an afternoon to get things done and the kids get some socialization. Another part of the site could be specific to rides to local activities. For instance if kids need rides to and from school or karate lessons. Moms could connect on the website and set up plans so one mom takes them and one picks up etc. I'm thinking you'd find one specific person to set up a plan with, not just go and find a new random person to pick up your kid each week.

What do you think? Is this a service you might use?

The purpose would be simply to connect people, not to do background checks all that. Moms would have to do their own due diligence to determine if the person is ok to leave their children with. It's kind of based on the "it takes a village" mentality and how we can all network to make all of our lives easier.

  • If the parents had to go through a background check to join I'd really consider it

This. After all this stuff I would be too nervous to do this.
  • LOL!  Bad day to ask. I would have been leery even prior to today to do something like that.  If it was through DH's work then I would be a little more willing (I have heard of things like this existing in the military community but have never been stationed where such a thing existed).

I might if this was done.

  • If it didn't do background checks, it wouldn't be that beneficial.  As it is, many local mom's groups have this service.  If I need a person to help with pick-up, I generally talk to a mother in the class/activity that I know already and set it up that way.

Once your kids are in school, you quickly make a network of other local moms to help with these things.  DS is in K and I have 7-8 other SAHMs I have met that have children that DS is friends with and we help each other with these things.

That sounds like a babysitting cooperative.  Many places have those.  If not you could start one.  The rides are easier to come by once kids are in school and doing activities.

I've never heard of one, they must not have any around here. Thanks for the feedback ladies. Background checks are a good idea, I would probably want that too. Just interested to hear what people think, as a few friends and I have been discussing doing this for each other.

I haven't been paying attention to what is going on today, maybe I need to read back a few posts!
