Shopping cart question.

Hi Ladies!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day! I had a question. For those of you who are able to put your LO's in the seat part of a shopping cart when were you able to start doing that?  I always thought that they had to be able to sit up unassisted to be able to go in there but I saw some pretty tiny babies sitting in them at target (and looking comfortable) and was wondering what other people did.  We are not quite at the point of sitting up without any help but I think DS could definitely sit in a cart if there was some sort of belt. I was also thinking about getting one of those cart covers to see if that would offer some more support.

I do not put his infant seat in that part of the cart and it is getting really difficult to go food shopping! I either put him in the snap n go and put the few items I can get in the bottom or wait until DH gets home and he pushes the cart. Also we found out at DS's 4 month appointment that he is almost 28 inches already (yikes) so it looks like he will be in the convertible seat sooner than I thought!

TIA!

Re: Shopping cart question.

  • I am a paranoid ftm, so I waited till DS could sit up unassisted. I don't use one of those covers though do I am only relying on the seat belt to keep him in there. I don't let him out of arms reach too because he can wiggle out of the belt.

Happily this all coincided with our switch to a convertible seat. I don't really need a car stroller just yet as I will use the shopping cart to carry DS when shopping.

  • M is 6.5m and I've been wondering the same.  Today while we're "playing" he sat by himself for 5 mins before he flopped over, which is the longest so far.  I'm thinking that at this point he might be ready for the shopping cart!  I probably will try taking him to the store w/DH around.

As for convertible seat, we are shopping for ours this w/e or next w/e.  M was 27" at his 4m appt, but he only grew 1" from 4m ->6m. Apparently their growth slows down a lot by 6m.  He still has about 1 more inch left in his carseat, so I expect he'll outgrow it within the next month.

I started when DD could sit comfortably while propped up and was able to hold her head up for an extended period without trouble. I have a big puffy cart cover, and used a blanket on one side of her and my purse on the other.

I waited until they could sit up unassisted before doing the cart thing and usually put them in my Ergo carrier while shopping :)  You could always give it a try and see how he/she is in it with just a belt?

I started at 6 months, when she was sitting up pretty well. I use a cover and I stuffed it with a blanket at first too. I like the cover by otherwise she puts the cart parts in her mouth. Also, IME some of the cart belts don't work, so having the one in the cover is helpful.... And it has loops for me to attach toy rings or a teether too.

    Same here.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and advice!! I wasn't sure if there was a stead fast rule about this or if it was a use your best judgment kind of thing.  I never thought to put blankets next to him to help so thanks for those suggestions.

Unfortunately he is such a squirmy guy he never really liked the moby or ergo too much.  I am hoping that changes because we got the ergo so we could go on our hikes again.  It is weird we have the sport version (because it is good for tall folks, DH is 6'5", hence the baby that is almost 28 in at 4 months) and even for as long as DS is it seems like he can't get his head over the hood part and it winds up cutting in to his cheeks when he turns.  I hope it gets comfy for him soon but between that and the squirminess I haven't tried it at the grocery store.  He cries pretty bad just walking around at home.

  • I think we started putting her in the cart (with a cart cover - we had one that had shoulder straps and a lap closure) at around 6m old - we had just switched to the convertible carseat also. I stopped using the cart cover a couple months ago - it's kind of a hassle, and once they sit really well - just wipe down the cart with the provided wipes :)

I also shopped with DS in the Ergo until he could sit up unassisted. Sometimes I still use it but mostly now I put him in the cart with a soft cover over it.
