NBR - to shave or not to shave?

Did I get yours guys attention?

He has been shedding so bad lately... I've contemplated it before because when I brush him his hair flies up and touches my face and I get extremely itchy! Does anyone else shave/trim their kitty cat? Does it it help cut down on the hair left everywhere! As he gets older he just seems to shed more and more!

  • I can't see the pic :(

I'm thinking of shaving one of my cats. She's not long hair but its thick hair. And she has dandruff (gross) but I see flea  dirt on her! No one else has had any fleas on them (2 dogs, 1 other cat, me or H) so I think this may be my solution. She gets front lined. She is REALLY fat and can't reach her back so maybe its old flea dirt. I don't know. I tried the waterless shampoo. Doesn't work.

I don't have any cats but my sister is a dog groomer and has done a lion cut on both of her cats (head is untrimmed and tail is left fluffy). They seems cooler in the summer

  • I see him! My sisters cat looks just like that but orange. She gets him shaved once a year. He gets dingle berries like you wouldn't believe and tracks poo all over.
  • You have a dachshund? I have one too, he's my cuddle bug but he also such a pain in the a$$!

Okay good! I wish I could find one of him without my dog in it a better close up but alas I can't find it! He's a longer haired kitty but with no under coat... When he was little he never shed unless he was stressed now it's all the time! My hubby hates the hair, and with a baby on the way we need to get it under control....lol I love him so much though he is so purty! I don't want him to be weird looking!

Yes I do! She is definitely a snuggler too! But just as much a pain in the butt! I would never trade her for anything though she is 3yrs old now! I got her at about 6 months old... She lost her 1st home because her family in the military her original owner got KU and they needed to move into a house on base and they didn't allow dogs so I got her for a freebie!

Are you talking about shaving the cat yourself or paying the vet to do it?

My vet wants $300 to shave a cat because most cats have to go under to get shaved. I'm all like, "hells no!".

I was trying to shave my long-hair kitty myself (to save the $300!), and when I was searching the web to figure out the best way, I found that it is best not to shave your kitty yourself. Their skin is so thin that 1 little nick will turn into a very long cut. That is why a lot of places won't shave cats (like PetSmart, etc.).

But I did find a place that will shave cats for $70 if they will cooperate, and my cat will cooperate- she doesn't have to be put under. It took a long time to find that place, though. I think it is a good investment, and it should help the hair problem. You'll have to keep getting kitty shaved to keep the hair short. How does your cat do at the vets?

What $300 holy smokes! Yeah I was gonna take kitty to either the vet or hopefully our pets mart had a cat groomer! I read some pets mart locations have them! I've put this off because I hate the idea of shaving but it seems like his hair bugs me more and more... My kitty is pretty well behaved! He kinda meows a lot if he is in a crate at the vet and loses hair but he doesn't move around a lot or act aggressive. I couldn't see him needing to be put under for a trimming!

If the cheapest I can get it is for $300 I may have to go back to giving the kitty baths... I used to do it when he was little but he hates them a lot!

Well after the $300 post I decided to call Petsmart and they do have a cat groomer but no availability until June 11th... I made an appointment then was told that they need the rabies certificate durr... Whether it makes me sound like a bad cat owner or not my Kitty is exclusively and inside kitty so  aside from his younger years to work up an immunity to rabies I've not gotten this for him.... well I guess he is getting a rabies shot this year...

My dog does get a rabies because she obviously leaves the home...lol

Oh their grooming and clipping is for $55 it's not a full on shave but a trimming which I think is okay to try for the first time around!

  • I honestly do not know if you are just taking the euphemism of kitty cat this far and really talking about your lady parts. But I kind of like reading it that way... *evil grin*

  • I only have sort hair cats but I brush them and give them baths to cut down on their shedding, so if they were long haired I'd have no problem shaving them in the summer.

I shaved my long haired cat all the time. They would give him a lion cut and he would strut his stuff afterward without fail! I live in a small town and every pet groomer would do it, but prices varied. Average was 60$. It cut down signifcantly on the shedding and dander. Not to jetion the dingleberries! I say go for it. Oh he was a big kitty and weighed 20 pounds!

Glad to hear it helped your kitty! I usually keep up on the Matt's he's got 1 little one on his neck though! He is scheduled but I need to go get him his rabies shot 1st! I'm so looking forward to less shedding and dander! My DH will greatly appreciate it too!
