I probably wouldn't bother comparing your kids to others. I'd look at a milestone chart before doing that. Comparing my daughter to other people's kids just stresses me out.
For faves though: She's a little shy of 15 months and her favorite things right now are her play kitchen, her Mega Bloks, her water table, and books. For food she loves chicken, pastas, any green vegetable, all fruit, and on and on. She hates ketchup haha.
When DS was 17 months, he started a picky-eating phase and a language explosion within about a week of each other. Pretty much overnight he started picking up a new word or two a day - it was pretty freaky at first. With the food, he just stopped eating everything except for yogurt, fruit, and bread, with a few expections.
Language varies so much between kids, though - DS seems to have had his language explosion earlier than other kids his age (which totally surprised me).
Toys... I think that's about the age he really started preferring his cars to his other toys. Now he likes his duplo blocks, his cars, his books...
DS turns 14 months old and isn't saying much, which is to be expected I think for a 14 month old lol. He says mama and dada almost exclusively in context, he says the cats name, uh oh, hi, no, night night, and I think he has said up a few times. He is climbing on everything and he has really mastered walking and squatting down to pick things up. He is definitely understanding a lot more, like "take a bite" and "come over here" and is testing boundaries a lot. This is such a fun age!
His favorite toys are the remote, any blocks or Legos, and books. His favorite foods are any fruit, rotisserie chicken, any kind of cracker, and green beans. He isn't super picky so he pretty much eats what we eat. We have just figured out he hates garlic. I tried to give him some hummus and he started to cry. I didn't think much of it and figured he was just done. Later that day my husband gave him some inside of a pita and he chewed for a few seconds and when he got to the hummus part he started crying again and spit it out. Poor kid. I'm not crazy about hummus either so it must run in the family!
I'll play even though I totally don't belong on this board.
At 27 months, he is combining words and phrases and it's hilarious watching language acquistion, particularly when he confuses names/titles or adds extra pronouns. Some of the best:
"I did it buckle the seatbelt!"
"No more monkey no jump on the bed!"
"Mama, I said bye to Uncle Emily"
He is running, jumping, climbing, walking up and down stairs, doing somersaults, flying face first off the couch, swimming, swinging on the big swings at the park.
He loves building toys (Duplos, wooden blocks, stacking rings, waffle blocks, peg board), puzzles, books, play kitchen and food (especially cutting food) and art projects. We haven't been able to do much with playdoh yet because it ends up in his mouth, but he loves coloring, painting, and stickers.
He is just now becoming a picky eater. He loves most breakfast foods and typical kid foods like PBJ, fruit, grilled cheese, yogurt, etc. He won't touch a vegetable and is very picky about meat and other non-dairy protein sources. I still think he eats better than most 2 year olds, however.
2 is fun but it's trying. We struggle with hitting and pushing, throwing plates and dumping milk, having fits of rage that leave kid-sized furniture across the room, sleep, and willful disobedience. When he's good, he's very good, but when he's bad, it's bad in a break-the-lamp-dent-the-wall-junk-punch-a-stranger-in-a-train-station kind of way.
I agree with not basing your LOs on how ours are doing. I know it's fun though to watch others' LOs and compare when they learn things.
DS is almost 16 months, and his favorite toys are balls and books. If he had his way, DH would read to him all day long. He also enjoys banging on things, especially his xylophone.
As far as words go, he has a handful of words and a few words that mean lots of things. Upupup can means he wants up or that he wants a cup. Dada can mean dada or all done or hungry. It's how he says the word more than anything.
DD is 16mos and she doesn't say anything understandable. She talks to herself all day though. She loves her books, she loves the slide and her cozy car.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!
DS is 14 months so a little younger than your twins, but his favorite toys are anything he can put in and out of a box or drawer (i.e., blocks, mega blocks, cups), his walker/riding truck that he pushes all over the house, and his wooden puzzles.
Favorite foods are probably chicken, turkey, peas, and pancakes/waffles (seriously, this kid would probaby eat as many pancakes or waffles as we'd give him).
What is his saying? Not a whole lot yet. He says agua for water, "all done" and "all gone" and although not technically a word ,he says "doga" for our dog. Sometimes he says "yeah" and "no." He also says mama and dada but we're still not sure those are directly associated with us, and he's starting to try and repeat things we say but those are one-offs so I don't really count those as words that he is officially saying.
Skill wise - I guess the only big skill he's developed in the past month is walking on his own. Still a little wobbly but he's pretty much dropped crawling for walking now.
DD2 is 17 months and has maybe 20 words. She adores dogs, including ours. She points out every dog we see and says "dog," and she gets really excited if she wears something with a dog on it. She loves to be outside and will cry when we have to go in. When inside, she'll go to our back door, point outside, and say "out." She loves to swing, go down the slide, water flowers, play with sidewalk chalk, and play in the sandbox. She loves books and her baby doll.
She loves breakfast - pancakes, waffles, eggs. Other favorite foods include yogurt, chicken, black beans, cheese, and all fruit.
Recently she started nodding and saying "yah," when she wants something or shaking her head and saying "no," when she doesn't want something. It's amazing how much that little bit of communication has improved life at our house.
DS is a nut. He doesn't stop talking-I'd guess he has well over 35 words, and is starting to pair them: All done, all gone, pretty flowers, red apple, and a whole lot more I can't understand.
He's a very picky eater, but loves blueberry pancakes, goldfish, honey nut cheerios, and bananas.
He could play with Mega Bloks all day long if I'd let him. He also loves books (playing with them, not always reading them), his chalkboard desk, and just playing outside. We go "walky walky" every day.
I tend to avoid making comparisons, too...but my DD is so much fun! She is soon to be 14 months old, and she is ALWAYS on the move! Her favorite toys are her books, her Ugly Dolls, and hockey sticks/pucks. She has recently started reprimanding our dog, and she has given herself the responsiblity of making sure our dog has a toy available to her at all times. Word we hear most: hockey, goal, cracker, daddy, socks, our dog's name, cup, eat, and no. She is trying to sing "Itsy-Bitsy Spider," and she has a pretty good range of food preferences. Favorites are: black olives, pasta, blueberries, yogurt, and chicken.
He has quite a bit of words and animal noises now. He is now spinning in circles, climbing, and walking backwards, attempts yoga poses, can point out body parts and say some, has a couple of two word phrases he says...usually "more (something)" and "my (something)". He's doing really well of trying to mimic what we say as well, and can understand most questions and directions now.
Favorite foods: Cheese, grapes, pears, apple, raisin bread, yogurt, pasta, beans, avocado, PB&J sandwiches (I wish there was something green in there...no such luck)
My DS is 17 months, will be 18 months on June 4th. He has changed a lot since hitting 17 months! Finally calls me mama regularly and means it. He LOVES and is obsessed with 'tucks' (trucks) and calls anything - I mean, anything - with wheels a 'tuck'. He loves dogs, books and being outside. He says hi to everyone he sees and has become very affectionate in that he will RUN across the room straight into our arms with a giant bear hug.
He was picky with his eating for a couple months but just this week he is eating everything we put in front of him. I made the mistake of buying him animal crackers and calling them cookies, because now he will run to the pantry and search around for his 'co-cos' and asks for them regularly. It's amazing to see his wheels turning. He can point our all major body parts thanks to the 'Toes, Ears, and Nose' book we have read 1000 times and has about 4 animal noises and can point out quite a few animals correctly when asked.
My not so favorite things: he is throwing food and his sippy cups like crazy. Will just chunk them as hard as he can when he is done with them. Working on correcting that behavior!
