SUBWAY

So I'm definitely a subway regular and I've been craving a sandwich like crazy. HOWEVER my dad is a food science guy and refuses to let me eat lunch meats, it's not recommended because of listeria and blah blah blah.... My next Dr apt isn't until June 25 so I was wondering if anyone's Dr gave them the okay? Or the no go.... I figure in moderation it wouldn't be too bad... But let me know!

I'm more concerned that your Dad is dictating your food habits for you. You can eat whatever you want. Your body, your choice.

  • Well he isn't really dictating them, more like freaking me out with list of things I shouldn't eat because he deals with food borne illnesses every day haha. I guess I could have said that better...

It's okay. Most things in moderation are okay. Eat a sandwich. Listeria can be found in many foods- fruits/veggies, salads, soft cheeses, some seafood, unpasteurized products, etc. You will drive yourself crazy. Just eat it in moderation. If you are really worried heat it up for a few seconds. Unless you are getting it toasted, don't ask the nice people at Subway to heat your meat.

  • The nurse at my office said that the listeria problem happens when lunch meat sits around for too long, and if it's fresh it is OK. Some people have recommended toasting it to wipe out any possible listeria threat. My personal philosophy is most things are OK in moderation.

  • Let me see if I can recap all the popular answers:

    1) The deli meat ban is ridic! Eat all the cold cuts you like.  In fact, sew yourself a cold cut gown ala Lady Gaga and rock out to Bad Romance while you shovel truck loads cold cuts into your mouth.

    2) Listeriaaaa Hysteria!  No cold cuts ever! Under no circumstances should you ever touch a cold cut.  Doing so will transform your baby into a fire-breathing half reptile/centaur with a detachable tail.

    3) Only if you microwave them into oblivion.  Fry up your canteloupe too.

    4) It's only ever safe to eat cold cuts while pregnant if you're simultaneously tossing shredded lettuce around the room confetti style.

    5) Eat as much deli meat as you like - but only after you've written a letter of complaint, ripped the head off your local sandwich worker, and phoned the President.

    Our family is complete!

So today my daughter has a picnic at school for her last day, and she requested Subway to be brought to her. I called my Mom to see if she'd pick it up so I can streach my lunch out longer and my Mom is like, "She likes just tuna w/extra tomato right? And with lettuce or without?"

And I just was like, 'snort giggle lettuce lololo'

This. Most things in moderation. I personally am not a fan of Subway, but I've eaten two turkey sandwiches this week from the cafeteria next door. I ask them to heat up the meat and all is fine. My doctor told me not to eat cold deli meats, but if I heated them up to steaming, that was fine.

I eat subway everyday for lunch.  My sandwich is toasted.  If your meat/produce products are properly cooled at a reputable place like Subway likely is, the listeria chances are low.  They are even lower if you heat up your stuff.

If you went to a picnic where meat/produce had been sitting out for who knows long, I'd steer clear of that.

  • I myself am a worry wart, so when I go I have them heat it up twice so I know it is hot enough lol
  • In "From the Hips," they say the risk of listeriosis from meat or soft cheese is 1 in 5,000,000. So you decide if your risk tolerance will allow for that. There are probably things you're doing that are much riskier for you AND your baby, like, say, driving. But you sort of have to drive, whereas it's up to you if you eat deli meat. I would cut a biitch for a Subway sandwich right now if I weren't a vegetarian.
I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

    Heat the meat.

It is probably fine anyways, but that should calm your dad down. Unless it's a nitrates thing. Then go buy nitrate free turkey and heat the meat.

I hate Subway. I love their tuna but that's it. It's so bland and they barely put anything on your sandwich. DH just told me he might have to work tomorrow. If he does I am going to visit my mom and try Jimmy John's. She lives near one of the only ones in my state.

  • OMG, I've been craving Subway like crazy! My doctor gave me the greenlight as long as its toasted.
  • I just tell them to toast it a little longer than normal. My doctor said it's fine as long as it's heated.

Now I am sitting here trying to figure out when the last time that I talked to my dad about my lunch choices was ..

  • Lunch meat should be heated to where it steaming toasting isn't enough. I had my husband just buy the bread from Subway then make subs at home. I heat up the meat to kill the listeria then put it in the fridge for a bit to cool it down and make my own sub! Works great.

  • I had a subway sandwich for lunch yesterday! The Italian BMT. Yum! And, wait for it... I ate it COLD! Gasp!

Ok, sorry, I agree with others. Eat what you want. For me it comes down to risk vs reward. I've never know anyone in my life to get lysteria, which doesn't mean it won't happen but does mean the risk is low enough that I didn't think twice about having the sub!

  • I did so good the first 4 after finding out I had a nugget in me. I stayed away from all the things my nurse said were bad...I don't like subway and have rarely ate it but this week I had some serious cravings Ive ate it 3 times and it was so good. I even had a small coke last night and I absolutely hate Coke, not sure Ive ever ordeded one but yup 3 cold sub sandwiches and a coke in a week and I don't regret a thing. Im sure this small binge will happen again and I wont worry as long as I do good the rest of the time

  • Sub sandwiches are my craving right now. I have one almost every day.

With DS, it was bologna. I had bologna and mayo on white with lettuce pretty much every day the last half if my pregnancy.

Meh.  I don't heat my Jimmy John's.  And I'm perfectly fine.  I wouldn't eat old lunch meat or lunch meat sitting out for a long time.

  • Mine said if its grilled or heated to steaming its ok. Never cold but it has to be hot and no more than once a week. I do believe subway toasts theirs if you ask. So if you went to my doctor, subway would, in theory, be ok.
  • Is this a joke?

  • Deli meats are a no go unless you heat them in the microwave until steaming. Sure, most likely you will not get listeria and everything will be ok. But if you do, you're at risk of miscarriage. I figure it's an easy thing to avoid. If I really want a sub I just get a hot one.
