Preemies

Late term preemie

Hi ladies, I have a late term preemie who was born 3 weeks ago at 35 weeks 4 days. She was born at 6 pounds 7 ounces but due to jaundice and feeding/BF issues she was 5 pounds 11 ounces when we left the hospital. Her actual birth was also a little scary bc she was sideways and got stuck coming out so they used the vacuum. The NICU nurses were on hand in our room when she was born and after a very scary 2030 minutes of her not crying and the nurses in a frenzy we were given the baby and no NICU stay was needed. She was under the lights for jaundice in the regular nursery for one 12 hour session. I'm just wondering what to expect in the weeks, months and years to come? Her lungs were fine and she's gotten the hang of bottles and as of yesterday is up to one ounce above her birth weight! Anyway does anyone have any experience with a late term preemie like this? Were there lasting effects in development etc? Google is scary me. ;

Re: Late term preemie

  • DS was 34w6days but almost exactly the same weight stats. He was in the nicu 6days...the only problems we had were reflux and eczema, both of which could easily occur with full term babies. It did take him until 11 weeks to smile and he didn't reach for objects until almost 6 months actual....not adjusted. Unless you count not knowing his colors and numbers as well as kids in daycare/preschool...he is right on track now.

    I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

    Try not to read google!

    My daughter was just born 35w0d about 10 weeks ago.  She is in great health I can't say much more since she is young still.

    My husband was born at 34 weeks over 30 years ago.  he is the healthiest man ever.  He was gifted through school, went to a top of the line university (we're in Canada) for his Engineering degree.

    Every child will have different outcomes and different paths.  But a late pre-term can go on to be as healthy and 'smart' as a full term baby.  Still holding out hope here that our later pre-term takes her daddy's path in that regard!!

    DD was born at the same as your DD, but was significantly smaller. 5 lb 3 oz. She has really bad reflux, but other than that perfectly healthy. My pedi doesn't adjust her age and has been reaching her milestones on target.

  • My older children were 35 and 36 weekers. They required short NICU stays as feeder growers. They are both happy, healthly, and normal as 7 and 8 year olds. My son was the 36 weeker and had sever reflux...almost requiring surgery. My daughter has minor attention problems but that is most likely hereditary from my husband...of course! Lol

    Prayers that everything goes wonderfully for you and LO!

  • I had a 34w 5d preemie and he was behind on the developmental checklist for maybe 9 months, then was totally caught up.  I looked at the 2 year checklist maybe 2 months ago, and he was already meeting almost all the milestones.  It didn't take long for him to catch up.  I even took his adjusted age ticker out of my siggy since it isn't a big deal anymore.
