Late Term and Child Loss

EDD

Has anyone had to work on their EDD?  I had requested mine off, which was fine with my boss.  But since returning from my six week leave, I've taken a few vacation days here and there when I was having a hard time coming in.

Come to find out, my vacation hours balance was not accurate, so I was actually using time I did not have.  So I have to go without for the next couple months in order to make up for it and now I won't have any vacation time in July to take my EDD off.

My options are to use sick time, though I usually need this for any doctor appointments I have, or I could just work it.  Since I will have sick time, I don't think they'll let me take it unpaid.  For others who have already experienced their EDD, was it a very bad day for you?  I'm really nervous about working it, but I am just not sure if I can afford to use sick time to take it off.

Re: EDD

  • My EDD was yesterday and I took it off. I found myself growing more impatient the closer the day got so I know that yesterday I would have been a raging animal. I took it as a mental health day because I know I would have not been a good addition to my office at all. If I were you, I'd work until July and then play it by ear... talk to HR next month to see if it would be possible to take it as unpaid maybe explaining your situation to the powers that be in that area will get you off w/o having to use a sick day.

The one lesson I can 100% say that my angel has taught me was to take care of myself first! We need to be gentle on ourselves through this first year especially... don't do anything you don't want to do.

  • I think because mine was so close to her birth, it wasn't especially hard (I was still on leave) If I were you, I'd take it off however I could. Take care of yourself.

  • I would take it off, that day will be hard for you. I was already off with "maternity leave"... ugh I don't want to use that phrase for it...

We spent her EDD hanging up more pictures of her, and didn't go anywhere that day. We ordered in and just cried together. It was a really hard day.

  • For us the week leading up to the EDD was worse than the actual day. The anticipation is always worse. We did go about our usual day. I had already gone back to work, but the EDD was on a Sunday. We did take some special time to celebrate her.

  • ***SIGGY WARNING***

My actual EDD ended up being the day Corbin went to heaven.  On the one year anniversary of that day DH and I took the day off.  I'm glad we did because we wouldn't have been any help to anyone.  We put together special display boxes of his things, visited the cemetery and watched the video of pictures we had.  I'd suggest taking the day off if anything, simply because you don't know how you'll be that day until the actual day.  And I'd do that even if it's unpaid.  This will be depressing but if you calculate how much you get paid per day it's not that much so you really won't even notice it in your paycheck.

In memory of Corbin Scott 10/28/11-12/3/11. Heaven got another angel the night you left this world behind Heaven got a little better the day it took you away from me Missing you tonight, see you again sometime For now I'll close my eyes and dream of heaven tonight I'll love you forever I'll like you for always Now and Forever My baby you'll be

Very good point, one day won't break our bank.  Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.  My mom died on September 5th and until things got easier (like after 6 years or so) I always took that day off so it's probably a very good idea to take my EDD off.  My boss said he has an idea for how I can get it off, so I'll hear his idea and hopefully it will work well.  At least he is being great about trying to help me get it off!
