Get DD out of our bed

And back in her crib. If you've done it, PLEASE share your tips. We have completely given up and she now walks to our bed, bc she thinks it's hers, and sleeps in there the whole night at bedtime and for her naps. I had it with having to lay on the floor of her room and hold her hand, for an hour or more, just to get her to sleep only to wake up after 2/3 hours. DH is now sleeping on the couch bc LO kicks him and there is no way I am having her in the bed next to me and a newborn to the right of me in the basinet come October. Somehow, she has to get back into her crib. She has a lovey, nightlights do nothing, no nap, it doesn't help. We are changing her crib into a toddler bed next week, though I'm not sure if that will help the situation.

I am very serious about getting her back into her room, DH Is wishy washy about it bc he just wants her to sleep, wherever it may be. And to think, at one time she slept like an angel in her crib.

If shes used to sleeping in a bed I would suck it up and just get her a bed vs. going back to a toddler bed and then a big bed later. Can you use the crib for the new baby and just get her a bigger bed?

I put DD right into a full size (crib converts to toddler/full). We had a little party in there the first night and I slept with her in it (I just felt like it showed her look mommy can sleep in here ok too). The next night I laid with her for a little bit and the third night she sttn on her own (she did cry for a bit). Make sure she has a lovey/blanket/stuffed animal to cuddle or anything shes attached to. We also have the cloud b bug that puts stars on the ceiling for 45 min that she loves to pick what color she wants each night.

Just make her room as safe/comfortable/fun a place for her and stick to your nightly routine. If she opens the door I would put a gate on it so she cant get out. If hubby is wishy washy about it (mine is always the one to give in) start on a night hes not home. Its tough but stick to your guns and she'll get used to it.

We had a family bed from the start, so getting DS to stay in his own room was a challenge. I would put him down in his toddler bed and he would stay there for maybe three hours before waking up and coming back to our bed. It took us moving him to a proper bed to get him to sleep through the night in his room. I did have to stay in the room for about half an hour the first 2-3 nights. I'm also thinking the mattress on his toddler bed just wasn't comfortable enough as he was used to our super comfy mattress. He's been staying in his bed for almost two weeks now. :) HTH

  • Thanks everyone. So you think the toddler bed won't work either? The crib converts to a full size bed as well, but DD and the new baby will be sharing the same room and there is NO way we can fit a crib and full size bed in the room. Perhaps a twin size bed then? I was going to even attempt to lay down with her in the toddler bed..

  • I would definitely do a twin bed in her room. A friend of mine put a sleeping bag on the floor by her bed and told her daughter she was welcome to sleep in her room but it had to be on the sleeping bag. She said that lasted about 3 nights, and she realized her bed was much more comfortable than the floor in mom's room. She does still come in occasionally during a storm or a bad dream, but she uses the sleeping bag. Not sure if that would work in your case, but I thought I would pass it along.
  • We've had to battle DD to sleep in her bed, but she was already in her big girl bed.  She went through a bad phase this winter when she was sick a lot, and she wanted to sleep with us.  We let her since she wasn't feeling well, but then it ended up being a bad habit and she wouldn't go back to her own bed.  We got her back in her bed by going with her and lying down next to her for a few minutes.  Then, I'd tell her I was going to clean up the kitchen/go to the bathroom/whatever, but I would come back and check on her.  I'd leave for longer and longer times, and often I'd go back to peek on her and she'd be asleep.
  • We bedshared for the first 14 months with DS1.  To get him out I (DH was working nights...) put him in a twin size in his room and did the "Sleep Lady Shuffle" sleep training method, which worked great.  In the middle of the night I just didn't want to mess with it, so if he got up, he had a floor bed (nap mat) in our room where he was allowed to sleep. He got where he wouldn't even wake us, just come crash on the mat.  We did away with the mat completely about three weeks ago and added a toddler clock to his room.  Aside from a couple of wakeful nights, he's STTN for two weeks straight now!

  • We've always been bed-sharers. 24-27 months were rather difficult sleep wise and we had a difficult time getting her to sleep anywhere.

At 32ish months we made a big deal shopping for stuff for her big girls room, redecorated it with her input and switched her in there. I don't know if it was just the right time or if it was about the big girl room but things got 10x easier and she now sleeps in her room, by herself, all night long.
