SUPing

My fave thing to do at the beach is stand up paddle boarding. My husband feels it is a high risk activity that I should put on hold for this summer.
I don't agree, I think it is fairly low risk. Its not like I'm wake boarding or water skiing. I'm pregnant not an invalid!

Opinions please: is stand up paddle boarding a risky activity I should avoid during pregnancy?

Re: SUPing

  • I would think it is something you would want to avoid. Hitting the water is a really hard impact if you were to fall. I would ask your doctor.

  • I would ask your doc for sure but IMO, I wouldn't. I wouldn't want to risk falling. Sure, you're not on a jet ski but so many other things can come into play when you fall (how you fell, if you happen to fall on to someone else even, etc). I wouldn't judge anyone that would. I just wouldn't want to risk it.

I read this because I had no idea what "SUPing" could be, and pictured a group of people sitting around saying, "s'up?" to each other, and nodding. LOL

    Lol me too.

I feel like even if it isn't super risky normally, your balance might be kind of off, depending on your belly. I would ask the doctor as well.

  • I'm going against the crowd. I feel like it is a safe hobby. You can control a fall easily. Our bodies are made to carry these babies. I knew someone who was sad because she could no longer sling 70 lbs hay bails to her cattle anymore because her belly was getting in the way. I also rode (gentle, lazy) horses while pregnant with my first.

My only concern would be for later on when twisting isn't good for your stretching muscles. Otherwise, I'd say go for it if the waves aren't going to beat you up- which I understand isn't the conditions you paddle board in.

  • I'm gonna go against the grain too and say if you're experienced and know your limitations go for it but use your most conservative judgement. I'm a therapist who works all day lifting people in and out of wheelchairs /beds and my doctor/midwife are fully aware. I work up until my due date and have had 2 successful preg/births. Trust your body and just use common sense/good judgement.

  • Kayaking is my favorite thing to do and my doctor says no way! If you find out SUPing is okay I would totally go for it!

1 had no idea what suping was.I would go with asking your doctor. My primary care dr went downhill skiing until she was 6 months, she would probably say go for it. Not sure what my OB would say. My RE would probably say no way.nbsp;[/quote

Hahaha that cat gif is excellent! :]

  • The way I SUP it's a high risk sport! But DH is really good and never falls off, if your good at it and not going out in surf I guess it's ok . I would only go out on calm still water but kayaking might be better
  • Thanks for all the responses! My next doc appt is in 3 weeks, so I'll check there.
We do it on the lake, usually totally calm. The wind needs to be crazy for the water to get choppy.
Interesting that someone said their doc said no to kayaking, my husband and I love to canoe and kayak.
Anyway, cheers to summer coming around the corner and all of the great activities we get to do in the summer!

I did too! I was like, "Is this a new thing?"

I think yes to flat water, no to ocean.

This. If you do it regularly and can control a fall, I think you're fine. Of course there's a little risk involved, but there is with pretty much everything, and I personally think this is minimal.

  • I would probably do it... I agree that our bodies are made to carry and protect these babies. When I was pregnant before we went on a ski trip with another couple who are our BFFs. They are both drs and the wife and I were both pregnant and we both snow skiied... We had a blast! I think as long as you are able to keep your balance and enjoy the activity then go for it. Of course this is MY opinion on what I would do. Everyone is different and make different choices. I'm just jealous you'll be at the beach!

I'm an SUPer and plan to do it this summer!  Couple of precautions I'll take: I won't paddle too fast at all.  If I feel my balance is off, I'll just sit and paddle!

I've done it before and consider it very low risk. Yeah, you can fall but you are moving slow and you land in water. It's like jumping into a swimming pool. Or stepping into one really. Bike riding is different you hit concrete when you fall
  • I live on a small island in the pacific called Guam where SUPing is a large part of my life. I am two months pregnant and still enjoying! I am just more cautious! It's something I've done for years so it doesn't fall under a new exercise routine. We also have a lot of coral so I avoid low tide! I also go in the mornings, sunrise is the best, and only in calm water. Frankly, I only stand about half the time bc I get tired faster. I also do some really easy yoga poses. The exercise and stress relief are huge pluses for the baby! Pregnancy is about what you're comfortable with, you're body will tell you if it's too much.

Lol at "small island in the pacific called Guam" - it is a US territory. We know the location. Not giving the natives a good name here.
