DS is still only saying about 4 or 5 words so just want to make sure that he's on track speech wise, don't know if anyone else has gone through this. I'm paranoid that he's behind but the lady I talked to made it sound like he's doing fine but they would take a look at him just to make sure.
Re: Made an appt with Early childhood
I think it's a good idea, at the end of the day if everything is fine they will put your mind at ease, and if not you will be on the waiting list (I know it's different in Canada but before age 2 the wait for a speech therapist referral is about 6 months, and after age 2 it is approx. 2 years, so it is good to get on early).
We are on the list for a speech therapist, as DH only has about 5 words, chances are that he will be fine and talk when he is ready, but I would rather not wait the 2 years if there is a problem.
Good for you for making an appt! We are in a similar boat word wise and I was going to bring it up at his 18 month appt which we couldn't get in until early June. If I remember correctly our dr. wasn't worried with DD at that age with lack of talking (she's 3 now and is a chatterbox!).
PS - I emailed you:)
It's always worth a shot, even if they think he's fine. You won't have to say, "I wish I had asked."
We've been seen by our Early Childhood program since we've been home, so I can say they have helped a lot.
Ditto this. DD had about 3 words at 18 months. DS has a few more than that, but not a lot (and not objects, more stuff like bye, no, whoa, etc.). I was worried about DD too, but she had a vocabulary explosion around 20 months and has been on track since then. They both had good receptive language starting around 15/16 months - I'd look more at that, because that's a good indicator that they are developing the capacity for language, and both pedis I've had when I've had toddlers have emphasized receptive language over spoken words at this point. It's better to be safe than sorry, but most likely your DS is just fine.
Thanks for doing that!
