While A was napping, I decided to do another taste test with fresh and frozen BM. The milk I pumped this morning is mild and sweet. The thawed frozen milk tastes like sour soap. I'm hoping I can donate what I have frozen, but I don't know if I have enough. I think I have about 80 ounces. I feel terrible for tourturing my sweet baby with that nasty milk!!! This sucks!!

Thank you for bring up the lipase issue. Amelia sends a big thank you!!! No more nasty tasting milk for her!

    So from now on you can scald the milk before freezing and it'll take care of the issue. Tedious, but it'll work.
    That's great that you are going to try to donate your milk! If for some reason you can't, some babies start to accept it as they get older so you can just label it. You can also use it to cook with later, like making oatmeal or pancakes for LO.
    I'm sorry that turned out to be the issue, but I'm glad we were able to figure it out. Hopefully the bottle issue will improve from here.

    Butting in....... What do you mean by scald it??? I have a freezer stash in the works and am just thinking ahead in case there are any issues!!

    You should look on kellymom or google it for exact instructions, but you bring the milk up to just before boiling then cool and freeze it. It breaks down the lipase so it tastes normal. Some babies don't care about the lipase anyhow so it's not usually a problem.

    Do a test on your stash. Thaw and taste one of your frozen bags. If you have over active lipase it will taste like you licked a bar of nasty soap...at least mine does! From what I've been reading, it's not a common problem, so hopefully you will be fine.

    Hummmmm. Maybe I will next time I left her with several bottles last Sat. She did refuse one, but took the others. Unfortunately I can't recall if what she refused was fresh or frozen!
