Fighting the spoon/self feeding issues??

My LO is 10.5 months old. He has recently began fighting the spoon to the point where I cannot feed him lunch/dinner. He does fine with breakfast cereal and yogurt for a snack. I know that this is pretty much him wanting to self feed BUT he just really cant do it?? He can put anything hard into his mouth - puff/snacks but nothing squishy really. He does a few things and then just plays in it. How do I get him to understand that its food and not play? I'm so frustrated and I know he is only trying to be a big boy.

  • Just let him try. It may seem like play but its the only way he can figure food and self feeding out on his own. His nutrition is coming from formula or breast milk right now anyways so I wouldn't worry too much about how much is going in. Just as long as he gets a wide range of colours, textures and everything is nutritious, I would just let him have fun. He will get the hang of it faster then you might think. My DD is fighting spoon feeding too, so I let her feed herself. Some meals she eats everything and some meals end up on the floor.

Play is part of the experience. Consider that playing with food helps with fine motor skills. Like dexterity and how to hold something soft without squishing it.

The only way they'll get better at self feeding is to let them practice. They'll get the hang of it!

  • Mine has been doing the same thing, and I was trying everything. Even things that I knew he liked, and nothing. He apparently wanted to feed himself with the spoon. Which let me tell you he is very messy about, but will not eat anything on a spoon I feed him. So I put a tiny bit of food on a spoon and place it on the tray, and he will feed to himself. I have tried little bits of food on the tray, and he just plays with it. Hth!

  • Consider yourself lucky!

Let him have at it. See what happens. My LO just turned 1 and I can't get him to pick up anything. He's NEVER picked up a morsel of food and put it in his mouth.

Also spits out any solids I give him. THAT'S frustrating. =)

    Enjoy your good eater!
