Trouble TTC

clomid vs. femara

Hi all!

I did 3 rounds of clomid (50mg, 100mg, and 100mg) with 1, 2 and 4 follicles. BFNs all 3 cycles.

Went in today for CD3 cycle monitoring and RE said I can do another clomid or femara. normally she likes to do injects after 3 clomids but I have a hard time with needles so she wants to stick to orals as long as we can, also due to my age (25).

what are the main differences between clomid and femara? is it normal to switch to the other after being on one-i.e. is my RE's protocol normal/a good plan?

TIA!

Re: clomid vs. femara

  • From my RE, Clomid produces more multiple follies and has more side effects. It also thins lining much more often.

For me, Femara gave me headaches, but nothing major. I only produced one follie with each cycle and have never had lining issues.

A PP mentioned it was more expensive. It is if paying cash but thanks to the lovely ladies here, I found that Target, Walgreens and Costco sell it for less than 10 as part of their pharmacy clubs. At Walmart I was paying 140ish for 5mg. Target charged me 10 and all I had to do was sign up for their free pharmacy club. I didn't specifically check SAMs club but I heard it was the same. Shop around for prices before you find the pharmacy you want to send the Rx to.

  • thanks ladies...tried updating my sig and I added information but can't get the formatting right-any ideas?

I guess my real question is, if I was responding well to the clomid, which I was, is there a point to do femara or should I be going to the next level (injects, or whatever). I guess it doesn't hurt to do it, correct? I know the issue with clomid is lining so I prefer not to be on it for any longer (she gave me the option of staying with clomid for another one or switching)

  • I did four cycles on Clomid (50mg, 50mg, 100mg, 150mg) and responded poorly. Doctor said that we should try Femara and so this is our second cycle on Femara 5mg.

Each medicated cycle (Clomid and Femara) has been different as far as side effects. Some cycles have really sucked and some have been no big deal.

It sounds like you have a good plan. GL!

    *Taking a break*

  • I have only taken Femara, the first time I was on 5mg and had 2 mature follicles, the second time I was on a higher dose and got one 17mm and two 11mm at mid-cycle monitoring. I really haven't had any side effects besides some irritability. GL!
