Re: Pregnant & TTC After a Preemie Check In 5/23/13

  • Hi everyone. I've never posted in this thread but dh and I are thinkining of / planning on ttc next spring / summer. Ds Evan was born at 31w due to severe pree. he's doing great but nicu really made having another baby scary.

My question for everyone is whether you went to see a mfm before you started ttc and when? My next yearly is in July. But we are going to ttc less than a year after that. Should I see the mfm first or my doctor? I want to do everything I can to prepare!
Thanks! I look forward to reading this post now. I was always scared to even open it because dh wasn't sure he wanted any more kids after what happened.

I would mention something to your OB when you go in for your yearly. See what they suggest, ask about chances of having another baby with pre-e, etc. If you feel like you need another opinion, I would see an MFM. Good luck with your decision.

I was still pg with DS (but in the hospital with my pPROM) when MFM mentioned that I needed to do a consult with her before we even thought of the possibility of TTC another baby. So we saw her in March 2011 when we were thinking about it and we planned on TTC that September. She gave us her advice and said I had a pretty good chance of going FT with the P17 shots. She did say that there was still a possibility she would have to put me on bed rest just to prepare us for it. After the consult, she made sure that I started prenatals and extra folic acid right away. I did have my yearly right before that and OB was happy about us trying again, but told us to do the consult before we did anything.

I completely understand your fear of having a baby after a preemie. It took us a good 3 years before we felt we could do this again. Good luck with your decision!

  • I'm still here ladies, I will be 38 weeks on Saturday.  No changes since last week, or even since the week before.  I've even managed to stay the same weight the last 3 appointments.

I am 1 cm dilated but have been for the last 3 appointments.  The baby is head down still but still not engaged in my pelvic bone.

I still can't believe I have gotten this far with this pregnancy.  I am so ready for the baby to come now and so excited for the opportunity to hold the baby right after he/she is born like a normal person.

    Now the hard part, waiting!!!

We did not but we were also unexplained PTL, so there really isn't much MFM is doing other than monitoring, which I knew I'd be getting anyway to a certain extent because of my IF history. Good luck! My update - saw the MFM this morning and cervix is still holding strong thank goodness. Will see my OB tomorrow and get more answers as to where we go from here.

I would talk to your dr at your pap and see what he/she says. I had pree with dd and went into labor at 35 weeks my dr said that my chances of getting it again do not increase because I had it with dd1. This pregnancy is going well so far I lam definitely more in tune with my symptoms and get nervous when I have a headache or something else that might be a sign of pre e but that's to be expected. I'm also planning on staying local after 32 weeks I don't want to travel on case an issue occurs Good luck.

  • PhillyGal, when we met with MFM before TTC this time, it was basically to get some odds and also develop a plan for how my next pregnancy would be handled. It was informative and helped set my mind at ease a little, since I really had to be talked into TTC for #2. So far, between the constant monitoring and P17 shots, I am still pregnant at 33 weeks, which is a huge thing for me. It's definitely worth meeting with MFM to see how they plan to handle your next pregnancy, good luck!

For an update on me, I am 33 weeks as of today and cannot believe I made it this far! I also cannot believe that I only have three weeks left of P17 shots...DH is going to be disappointed when he can no longer stab me in the a$$ in a weekly basis, lol!

  • Thank you all and reading your updates has given me so much hope!!! You are all doing awesome and your babies will be so thankful that you worked so hard to keep them safe as long as possible. I'm going to lurk on here if that's ok. Since we aren't ttc for another year I won't have much to add until I see my dr in July and maybe a mfm and then I may have some questions. Keep on keeping on mamas!!!

  • Sorry for posting late, we were on vacation in NC. Which was great. Anywho, I had an appointment with the MFM back on 5/23. Baby looks great, she's right on schedule and weighs about 1 lbs and & few ounces. He advise I didn't need another follow up appointment. Hope that means everything is well.I have my glucose screening 6/17.
