Front-loading HE washers

Am I doing something wrong here?

There's a gross amount of particulate matter building up on the glass and around the tub where the seal is.  Mostly hair, but there are other things like some food particles when the boys' clothes still have food from dinner or whatever.

Am I not washing the clothes correctly?  Is it time to do a tub wash already?  Will that even get rid of this build up of crud or do I have to manually clean it?

It's every cycle no matter how I set the water temp, spin or soil level.

Re: Front-loading HE washers

  • You have to clean it out manually as far as I know. That's one of the many things I hate about my HE front-loader.  I've never found food, but I find hair, lint and random things from pockets.

Yup, normal in my experience, unless I'm doing something wrong too. If I'm every in the position to purchase a washer it will not be a front loader. I really dislike it for this reason and because if you don't wipe it clean/dry after every wash it gets stinky. I don't have time for that ***.

Yeah, I really think the "efficiency" is outweighed by the fact that I have to rewash so many clothes and run it empty to wash it.

    Plus, can't you get a top-loader now that's HE?

You can...  but they're not mechanically the same as old-school ones.  Not in the water usage way, but in the actual nuts and bolts way.  The mechanisms that used to turn the drums used to be 3 parts (3 gears that worked to divide the stress), and are now down to one.  So, one part doing the same work that three used to do creates more stress on the machine and the expected lifespan of the washer has been diminished.  At least that's what I've read from mechanics' reviews of the new HE top-loaders.

We just leave the washer door open if we aren't washing and we've never had any problems with it getting stinky.

I try to leave it open to, but I can't leave it open all day. 1) It's in my kitchen, across from the fridge. I live in a small apartment and 2)  DD thinks it's fun to open and close it. And open it. And put random toys in it. And close it.

The toys going in the washer would so happen at my house. And then I would spend hundreds of dollars trying to get it fixed to find out that Dora the dang explorer is stuck in the bin somewhere.

I leave mine just barely open and it still really does help.  DS doesn't really notice that it's open, and it doesn't draw his attention since it looks closed.  Of course he's never really been that interested in it though.
