Preterm Labor

I'm in need of some advice or encouragement. Last night we made a trip to L&D for consistent contractions and decreased fetal movement. After about 3 hours on a moniter, the baby is doing fine but I am at high risk for preterm labor. I was given a couple of shots to stop the contractions and a shot to help speed up babies lung development.

Today at my appt with my doctor, she said I was about 1-2 cm dilated and still having some contractions. She prescribed me an oral medication to stop the contractions and hopefully by me a couple weeks.

So I guess I'm just looking for anyone who has been through something similer to share their experience or any advise/encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Re: Preterm Labor

  • You can do it! I went through the same thing and made it another 4 weeks, I was put on strict hospital bedrest so try to take it as easy as possible.

I know it's hard, but try t take it day by day.  This happened to me twice.  I went into PTL (I have cervical issues) with my first at 29w.  I was contracting and when I went to the doc to get checked I was 2cm dilated.  They took me to the hospital and I was given all the shots, mag sulfate, beta to help the lungs, and was ultimately kept in the hospital for three weeks.  They let me go home after those three weeks, but I was still on bedrest because I dilated 2 more cm during that time.  Silver lining: I still made it to 37w4d.

With my second, same thing.  Went into PTL at 30 weeks, shortened cervix, dilated to 2cm, contractions, the whole nine.  Was in and out of the hospital a bajillion times and it was awful, but I delivered her at 37w.

I'm now pregnant with my third, I'm 35w, dilated to almost 2, but this time I have been taking progesterone and I get checked every week.  It definitely hasn't been easy, but now that we know what  my body does, it's easier to spot the signs.  I guess my point to this post is that there can be a silver lining.

I did go into PTL twice, but made it full-term.  I hope that happens for you.  Good luck!!

  • Your experience sounds so similar to my last pregnancy. I was put on procardia and bedrest and my doctor had hoped I could make it to 35 weeks. I had gotten both steroid shot for baby's lungs. I would suggest if your doctor hasn't bedrest. I really think it helped. Remember you can do this!

Praying for you and your LO. Please keep us posted.

Thank you ladies so much for the encouragement! I am currently at home on bed rest and trying to make the best of it.

  • Girl, you make the most out of that bed rest and I hope you LO stays in there as snug as a bug. My baby girl is a week old tomorrow after being born at 28wks. I too was 2cm dilated when I went in to see my doc, but babes head was already down there and she was ready to come. I had a shot of steroids that morning, mag sulfate at the hospital, antibiotics, another shot of steroids at 10 that night, and she was born at 10:31 the next morning. I know bed rest might seem really difficult right now (especially when that nesting instinct kicks in and all you wanna do is clean) but it is definitely the most important thing you can be doing for your baby. Good luck to you!
  • When you are on bed rest really be on bed rest. Don't do the 'oh, just this one thing'. Add too many of those together and you're no longer really on bed rest. I did this and this was what landed in PTL also it's super important to stay hydrated. Just watch tv, be on the computer, read books. Also sitting isn't good as it puts pressure on the cervix. Stay laying down as much as possible. GL

I was lurking here about to post the same question. Your response mirrors my current situation and gives me some hope that there is a chance I could last weeks instead of days. (I am 29 1/2 weeks) Thank you for posting this.

My pre-term contractions started at 31 weeks.  They were every 3min 24/7.  When I got up and walked they sped up and lasted longer. I received the steroid shots just before 32weeks after some minor changes were noted in the cervix.

I did 4 weeks of bedrest and baby arrived at 35weeks.  She may have held out a little longer but my placenta was showing signs of detaching and I have type 1 diabetes so the call was made to deliver early.  Not sure if the placenta was detaching due to 4 weeks of contractions or from diabetes but if it was from diabetes it could become fatal if we left her in.

My contractions varied from uncomfortable to days long of killer contractions I couldn't talk through.  They kept me up at night.  Bed rest helped to ease the pain level of the contractions at times.  I still got up to go to the bathroom and grab food during the day.

    How far along are you?

My baby was born by C-section as she ended up stuck in birth canal and after 2 hours of pushing she was not budging.  She was born 8lbs0oz (my diabetes and my husbands family of LARGE babies at play there).  She spent 4 hrs in NICU for low blood sugar and for thorough exams.  She had a touch of jaundice and was under the lights for 1 night but was otherwise healthy and strong.  We had no problems with feeding (aside from my milk being very delayed due to low iron from blood loss).

So far she is meeting her milestones based on delivery date but she has her growth spurts based on due date (I think). Do you best to keep baby in the oven as long as possible. For us her arrival at 35weeks showed no negative impact on her development (so far).
