Has anyone used one of these? We were given a old Kelly that has wheels and a stroller attachment. It is huge, cumbersome, uncomfortable, and heavy. DH and I hike and travel to many places where a heavy duty backpack style carrier is going to make the most comfortable.
Re: Osprey poco?
We got one of these! We've only used a handful of times but I really like it.
Pros: easy enough to put on, waist belt is adjustable even when you're wearing it
-like the pull-out sunshade
-our baby (8 m.) LOVES being in it
-washable drool pad, haha
- we got the 2nd best one (poco plus I think??) and it has a roomy pocket for stuff like a picnic lunch
Cons
-it seems to me like it's a bit of a crotch-dangler (not a lot of butt support) for baby so I hope that this won't adversely affect her on long hikes
-(we travel a lot) too bulky for carry-on luggage and I'm concerned that if we check it then it might be damaged.. but this is probably true for any baby backpack
We were just looking at these as REI has the Poco plus on sale this week, but decided to go with the Deuter pack instead because of the crotch-dangler style seat in the Poco. It's too bad because the Poco has some better features like the harness, canopy and stirrups to support the feet for older kids.
DD loved the Deuter pack and wanted to ride in it even at home. I haven't personally tried out either one since I can't cinch the belt around my pregnant waist, but DH liked the feel of the Deuter Kid Comfort.
Part of my issue is the saddle seat but I feel like the stirrups fix that because baby is "standing" rather than hanging by their crotch.
The one we were looking at came with a travel bag that would fit in an overhead compartment.
I looked at this as well, I am concerned that DD would be able to learn how to open the harness (and DH can't get it buckled).
I don't think it would be easy for a child to learn how to open the Deuter harness. It's positioned low and with limited access, so the baby would have to know how to do it blind and have the coordinated strength to depress both sides, which is why it's a bit more tricky for us adults to clip it in the first place.
Did you try out your LO in the Osprey? I'm curious if the feet actually reach the stirrups at this age? I'd be much more concerned about the seat ergonomics with an infant vs an older toddler who could easily spend more time outside the carrier.
