    Is your question when do babies start dreaming and having nightmares? Dr. Ferber said that dreaming may start as an infant, but there is no way of knowing until they can talk about their dreams.

    He has good info in his book about nightmares and other sleep problems with babies and kids.

    From what I understand they do have dreams etc.  I recommend the chapter that Ferber has on this kind of thing.  Some babies will scream while still sleeping and push you away when you try to comfort them and that is normal, its just a stage of sleep.
