Istation?

Does anyone's child take the test at school? How reliable do you think it is?

I'm asking because when my child takes the test, We're not sure if he understands it or if he is getting distracted with other students being in the room with them.  When he does the test it come back the he is a little behind but when his teacher does work with him one on one, he does great. Everyone always say he is so smart but when it comes to school he doesn't care to learn it. I'm not sure if he really is having trouble learning or if he is bored with it so there for he doesn't care to learn.

    Who is saying he is so smart? Honestly loved ones will always say a kid is smart and see the best in them. If he struggles in both class and on tests then I would be concerned and want to figure out what is causing it and I would assume he is not doing worse in both for boredom. It could be something as simple as the teachers classroom management skills suck but it could be something more.

    All of his teachers! I think he learns different then some of the other students and we haven't figured it out yet.

    Istation is a comprehensive and computerized teaching tool for reading. It is sometimes used as a RTI approach for a child who is not grasping material at grade level. It can be a powerful tool for the reluctant reader/student as it plays rather more like a video game than reading instruction.

    There's a notion in the education business that any assessment is a snapshot in time demonstrating that of which the student is capable in that moment. It could be that he knows the material but could not access it because of the format of the test, or because he lacks the academic stamina to complete the assessment or because he was distracted by kids doing centers on the other side of the room. It would be useful to know why he is unable to perform as expected to differentiate his instruction. Why matters.

    I would assume that an Istation assessment would be very accurate and  somewhat more bulletproof against distractions and fatigue given the engaging nature of the format compared to more traditional pencil and paper assessments. 

    When a child seems bright enough to master the material and isn't, it's important to know why. Learning differences/disabilities could be one answer. He may be unable to decode the written word because of visual tracking or phonemic discrimination glitches. He could lack the expected ability to self regulate and attend to the lessons because of a behavioral issue like ADHD. Kids have a tendency to avoid activities that are challenging for them and will not get the practice needed to master the material which sometimes spirals into a cycle of not doing the work and falling further behind. Sometimes bright kids on spectrum blow off material they don't deem interesting or relevant.

    In your situation, I'd embrace the scores and use them to get additional evaluations done to uncover why this is an issue for him and how to best address it.
