Bedtime Bottle

So, at 16 months I think the bedtime bottle needs to go. He is drinking less of the bottle and getting bored with it, so I guess that helps in getting rid of it. What do you give kids in the evening after dinner? A sippy cup of milk before bed? A snack in between dinner and bedtime? I'm not sure how to get rid of the bottle and if I need to replace it with something else.

Re: Bedtime Bottle

  • We just took it out and didn't really replace it with anything. Sometimes he gets milk after dinner if he didn't get enough milk or fluids during the day but most of the time we do dinner at six and bed around eight and he doesn't seem to miss having a little something extra.

  • DS drinks a sippy of milk while I read a couple books to him before bed. Once I cut out the bottle, it took him a couple days to figure out what he wanted. He wants to be topped off before bed.

This is just what we do, and it works wonderfully!

  • When we stopped the bottle at 11.5 months, she stopped getting anything after her dinner (except water, if she wants it).  She gets milk at meals only, water is available to her the rest of the day.  She eats dinner about and hour before bed.

  • I would offer a sippy of milk after dinner or 20 minutes before bedtime routine begins. I wouldn't replace the bottle with a sippy, I kinda feel like you are trading 1 bad habit for another.
  • Mine has been showing the same disinterest with the bedtime bottle this week, too. He goes to bed within an hour of finishing dinner, so I don't think we'll replace it with anything, but I am a bit concerned about milk intake since that's the only milk he drinks all day...

  • We never ever did a bed time bottle for a few different reasons.

But we basically do this. Milk with meals and water throughout the day. She gets water after dinner to help "rinse her mouth out" and then we "brush her teeth". DD probably eats around 6ish and is in bed by 7:30 or 8.
