Nap time routine?

I'm reading the no-cry nap solution. I'm realizing we don't really have a nap routine. I usually just change diaper, we get in my bed, and plunk her on the boob. We both usually pass out or I read or bump from my iPad.

She wont take long naps unless she is snuggled beside me. We don't have nighttime sleep problems, so I really haven't worried too much. I don't mind napping with her, but my busy season starts in the next few weeks and my mom will be watching J. I can't have her not nap or take crappy 40min naps all summer.

The book suggests starting a nap time routine at the first tired queue. Can you share your nap time routine?

Re: Nap time routine?

  • We do an abbreviated form of our bedtime routine. He gets his paci and lovey, we change his diaper and put on his sleep sack, we read a book, we tell him it's sleepy time, and we put him in his crib. DS is a lot older than J, but we have been doing a form of bedtime routine at nap time for a while.

  • I've been doing the same nap routine since M was around 3.5m.  The nap routine is quite different from bedtime routine, mainly b/c I'm the one who puts M to nap during the day, while DH does the bedtime by himself.

    Our nap routine is:

go to his room and nurse until he dozes off, then I wake him up and start singing (the same 2 songs for every nap). While I'm singing, I close the curtains, put him in the crib, put on sleepsack, and give him his lovey. When I'm done singing, I tell him it's nap time, say "Mommy loves you," and I leave the room. He'll talk/squeal/fuss but usually is asleep w/i 5.10 minutes.

I used to turn on the white noise machine but we weaned that off at 6 months.  DS doesn't take a paci.

Now at 6.5 months, he routinely sleeps for 1-1.5 hours at each nap.   Sometimes he'll wake up at the 30-min mark but these days he'll put himself back to sleep (on bad days he may cry on/off for 15 minutes but he'll eventually go back to sleep).

Ours is a little different from everyone else's. I feed him and change his diaper then he lays on the couch in front of me for about 30 min and we talk/play. Then I lay him on the play mat and he looks around for about 20 min. When he starts showing his sleepy signs, I swaddle him, give him the paci and put him in the swing and he's out in 1015 minutes.

He naps in the swing once or twice and then the crib once or twice as well so he's used to napping just about anywhere.

  • Thanks everyone! J had her first good nap without me today! I darkened the room, put on socks, and half wrapped her swaddle (all like bedtime). She did nurse to sleep and stay in my bed (watched closely on the monitor). Yay!
