Trouble TTC

nervous! just came out on FB...

Not in a big way, but I added a badge to my profile pic in support of infertility awareness. My hands are shaking and my heart is beating so fast! I'm nervous because I'm not sure how friends/family will respond. Or if they will respond at all!

Help me out, 3T: Did I do the right thing?

ETA: Here is my new profile pic!

Re: nervous! just came out on FB...

  • good for you! I have always wanted to and am pretty open in public but DH does not approve so I wouldn't get the green light from him. I find that the more people know and the more people you talk to, you find more people who are going through it with similar experiences and tips and just helps to have it in the open.

  • I felt the same way when I posted about IF awareness week.  I didn't know what to expect as far as responses.  I had myself prepared for a bunch of dumb comments (when my sister came out about her m/c, my cousin posted that "God will give her a baby when the time is right."  This is the same cousin, that had just had an unplanned baby that her and her husband couldn't afford.), but all I got a few likes for my posts but no comments.  It was kind of a let down after expecting the worst.

As far as whether or not you did the right thing, I don't really think coming out on facebook is either "right" or "wrong."  In my experience, I am happy that I came out and I feel like a weight has been lifted.  I still don't post updates on our treatment, but just knowing that I put it out there is very freeing.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • Good for you.  I think if/when to come out to others is such a personal decision and each person has to do what is right for them.  I haven't said anything on FB, partly because DH is not really a fan of talking to others about it, and partly because we are so "new" to the IF journey that I feel kind of strange. I think it is incredibly brave for you to do it.

  • Good for you for being bold and brave!
However,  I would like to add in about the IF symbol; most people that are not going through IF will not understand what the symbol means. I put it on my profile picture during NIAW, and I just got comments about the picture itself, not the symbol.

I came out by writing a blog, and then sharing that on Facebook. I felt like that was better, because the people that actually give a darn about me read it and commented, and have been continuously praying for my DH and me. The blog is also a great way for me to journal my experience, and is a great outlet for my emotions!

  • Congrats!  I don't think coming out is necessarily "right" or "wrong," but a personal decision.  I think it takes a strong woman to take that step - You should be proud of your decision and the process you are going through.  I hope your badge illicits lots of love and support from your friends and family!

I felt so much support from my friends and family and it made me feel empowered and strong. I think you made a great decision and you should be proud :

Good for you!  I know coming out is scary.  Coming out for NIAW was a really hard decision, but the responses were really incredible and supportive.  A few people ,messaged me and came out about their own struggles with m/c and IF.

As Twinkie said, there really is no "right" or "wrong".  For me it was about raising awareness and to help those who may be struggling alone, not realizing IF affects so many couples.  Curbing stupid comments is an added bonus :)

    Your picture is beautiful!

All of this!  Wolfette took the words right out of my mouth. Smile
