Tips for keeping LO cool in the summer heat

Yesterday was the first day we've had that was about 85 and I noticed LO was extremely fussy any time he got hot (and I don't blame him!).  I tried to take him out in the stroller but we had to turn back because he started screaming.  He was miserable in the car and in his car seat when I tried to run errands.

He was wearing as few clothes as possible, I tried cooling the car before we got in, and wasn't in direct sunlight in the stroller.  I feel like I'm trapped in the house now that the weather is warmer but I know that can't be the case b/c I see other people out with their babies.  Help!

  • Light colored clothing, lots of shade, and keeping exposure to the heat limited as much as possible are really your only options. Most babies cry in the car seat anyway, hot or not, so try not to let that deter you.

  • Lurking, but it gets really hot here in the summer, and we didn't have A/Cin our old house. DS was always in just a onesie, or a romper. Alot of the public places here don't have A/C either, so it is not uncommon.

  • maybe before you go out for the day; give the baby a luke warm or cooler bath. That should get the baby's body temperature down a little bit, so you don't have the baby over heating. I would apply some sunscreen as well.

I also heard that extra feedings can help- the baby might be dehydrated. If you formula feed, give them cooler/cold formula.

You can also wet a small wash cloth, and wipe the baby down where they get hot (armpits, neck, forehead)

  • I bought a small battery operated fan with a clip to clip it to the stroller for when LO gets hot.

Go outside earlier before it gets too bad.

No sunscreen until baby is at least 6 months old. Just keep them shaded.
I would just try to do shorter trips if it's super hot, but eventually they will get used to it.
