Masonmama

Hi. Being nosy. Have you tried an SNS for your supply issues? Do you pump? What have you tried so far to boost your supply?
Please feel free to tell me to shut it.

Re: Masonmama

  • I have no problem sharing.

I did use a SNS with my first son. I did not have much luck with it, possibly because I was using it when he was a newborn.

This is what I have tried:

Nursing as much as possible. In the beginning, I nursed basically 24/7. At this point, I still put him to the breast frequently.

Staying super hydrated. I drink ridiculous amounts of fluids.

12 fenugreek and 9 blessed thistle a day

Mother's Milk Tea .. I drink 4 travel mugs most days (total of 48oz)

Oatmeal most days. (not all, but I try)

    lactation cookies

lemon-lime gatorade (I was skeptical, but I tried at someone's recommendation and actually noticed a difference.)

And I have pumped. A LOT. I try to pump 10 minutes after each feeding, and I power pump for two hours in the evening. (10 minutes on/10 minutes off).

I still can't satisfy Cole. His weight percentile kept dropping. He was always miserable. I finally started supplementing with formula recently, and things are going so much better. It makes me sad because I know that once I had to supplement DS1, he soon started to refuse the breast. Some days he only gets about 4oz of formula, but there have been days he has received 16oz. I haven't given up on working on my supply, but it really has felt like a full-time job to just try and keep up.

If you have any other ideas, feel free to share.

  • What's the thistle stuff? I'm still looking for help with my milk when it dips every time we travel.

What I was going to suggest that has worked for us is solely pumping.
C refuses to latch much at all now. Maybe once a week. When he did though for about a week, my supply dropped fast and hard. I think it was just that he wasn't suckling enough to really make my body produce. The pump though works. I know the specialists say nothing is better than baby to stimulate and encourage production but what if it's not? You have to stimulate a let down. With C it just didn't work because of his latch. I sometimes have to do two rounds of the let down cycle on my Symphony to get my milk going sometimes.
I would give just about anything to have him at the breast but it just doesn't work but I'm determined to get to six months. So we pump.
What about pumping exclusively for a few days to see if it stimulates production? Since he's good with the boob he won't get confused if you use a NUK or a BOOB bottle and then breast feed for comfort when you're done pumping? You'll still give him milk after pumping. I know it sounds backwards but it worked for us.
I really hope something works for you. I wish I could find something to get him to latch.

  • Hmmm. Interesting. I never thought about doing things backwards and pumping before nursing. I have always heard to do the opposite. We have never had latching issues, and he loves to nurse I am slightly afraid that he will lose more interest in nursing if he is getting even less milk from me and more from the bottle. That is what led my first son to wean himself when I had to supplement. I will definitely think about trying this though.

I don't know as much about blessed thistle as the fenugreek, but it is recommended when fenugreek isn't working enough on its own. This link has a little bit of info.

Supply issues are no fun. I am sorry that you are going through this as well.
