A little anxious (NIFR)

I'm a little anxious because as part of my lab results from my RE, we learned my liver enzymes were a little elevated. My RE wanted me to go to my primary care doctor to figure out why. I saw my pcp this morning and she ordered a whole bunch of new blood work and an ultrasound for tomorrow morning. :( I hardly drink (maybe a glass of wine a week, if that) and I only take Metformin for insulin resistance and a super low dose of Synthroid. I hate new mysteries and I especially hate my body sometimes! Has anyone else dealt with abnormal liver tests?

Re: A little anxious (NIFR)

  • ((Hugs)) I haven't dealt with that before, so I have no advice. However, my acupuncturist has asked me several times if my RE has discussed possible effects on the liver from fertility meds. He said he'd read an article about it but couldn't remember what meds it was discussing. It might be worth researching?

I can only imagine the toll all the meds take on our livers. And mind you, I was only 3 weeks post miscarriage when my blood was drawn. I did read that progesterone itself can cause elevated enzymes, and even the damage done in an IM injection can cause it. But my RE didn't think it was related, and neither did my pcp.

I forgot to mention that my pcp thought it might be a gall bladder issue. And if it is, I get to have it removed. YIPPEEEEEE. Not.

  • Yes!  All the time, unfortunately.  It's becoming more common I think too.  For me, I was diagnosed with Focal Nodular Hyperplasia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.  Honestly, I think my liver enzyme are mostly affected by what I eat.  The first time I had them tested they were horrible, 6 months later they were much better but still abnormal.  I ate a lot better in those 6 months.  Then another 6 months later, after eating horribly, they came back the worst ever!

Try not to worry about it too much until you know something.  I will tell you one thing though.  I freaked out when they "found and saw something" on the ultrasound.  Then they wanted me to have an MRI and then I saw a liver specialist.  I was diagnosed with FNH and it's essentially benign liver masses.  Mine have gotten a little smaller each year since stopping birth control pills but they still are concerned about it growing with the increased estrogen.

FWIW though, my friend has it, went through IF treatments, got pg and has a child now and no issues with her liver and still has the same stupid elevated enzymes.

ETA: I'm being put strictly on progesterone for supression instead of bcp because it isn't metabolized through the liver.

  • sorry you are dealing with this. metformin can cause slightly elevated ALT. have they tested your liver enzymes before (and after being on metformin)?

it may be your "normal" on metformin. liver is nothing you want to lose, so it is better if they are cautious.
