So, the new house has a pool. It's not fenced in, but the entire 1/2 acre back yard is. We want to redo the kitchen and were running out of cash. We would have to put a fence around just the pool itself, the cheapest quote we have is 3,500.
DH wants to keep the pool, personally with three kids under 5, the pool scares the sh!t out of me. My mom offered to pay to get it filled in, but were afraid we will regret it in a few years.
Would you take her up on her offer and have it filled in?
Pay for the fence and open the pool?
Leave the cover on this year and give it more thought?

Re: Swimming pool, WWYD?

I can only answer these from my personal perspective. There isn't a chance in hell I'd fill in a pool.
Pay for the fence and open the pool?
Pay for the fence. Open the pool. Expose the boys to water, get them lessons, get them safety lessons. I know they're young, but there's no harm in exposure to water, water safety and swimming lessons.
Leave the cover on this year and give it more thought?
Up to you. I'd leave the pool covered and put the fence on it, or I'd put the fence up and open the pool. There's no way I'd leave a pool without safety measures to keep my kids from it. Regardless of whether it's covered or not.
Keep in mind that we have a pool on our MUST HAVE list for the next house. I don't remember where you live, but it's BALLZ hot here in the summer, and I'm in need of a personal pool.
Seriously, fencing it in is an investment and you will thank sweet baby Jesus that you didn't fill it in. You're kids are only that little for a short time.
Having grown up in an area where pools are in pretty much every back yard, I have two things to contribute. First, covers can actually make pools more dangerous. Small children end up trapped under them all the time. Scary as sh!t.
Two, don't fill that thing in! No way! I vote fence. I know money is tight, but you'll ultimately lose value on your home if you fill in the pool, so I don't think it will balance out, you know?
// I love you too. //
I don't know anything about getting pools filled in, but if that's a permanent thing, then I would say no unless you REALLY know that you will never use it.
If you have money for the fence, I say do the fence. That's a safety issue. The kitchen can wait a little while, or maybe you can just do parts of the kitchen now and upgrade the rest later. I've never done major remodeling, either, so take my advice with that in mind.
Don't fill it in, we have a pool and we love it.
Fence that baby in, fill it up and have a great summer.
DD has a swim sweater for this summer, the rule is if we are back the pool she must have it on, once she is ready I will then use a safety seal to teach her how to swim. Get deadbolt locks for any doors that can lead to the pool and install them high - almost out of your reach. We also have an alarm on our fence in case she somehow gets past us, if its not inactivated it will go off if you open our fence.
I would never fill in a pool. My parents got a pool when I was growing up....my siblings and I always say that our best childhood memories are of summers out back at the pool!
Answering all the questions:
She would never help pay for a fence. She only wants to help pay to fill it in. What's funny is we grew up with a pool. She had three kids under 5 and a pool. But, it terrifies her that I have a pool. She's a control freak.
I don't think a kid could get under the pool cover that's on now. It's a winter cover that is attached to the concrete every 8 to 12 inches. It's on tight. It's also the kind of cover you're supposed to be able to drive a car over.
We live in Ohio. It gets humid hot here, in the high 90's with humidity making it in the low 100's.
I'm concerned about the yearly costs. It will be approximately an extra 1000 a year. The pool can only be open about 4 months out of the year. And, some of that time it could be cold. The weather is wacky here. And there's upkeep, we don't know the condition of the pool. We do know it was open last summer and used quite often.
Fence it! You wont regret it.
No way would I fill a pool. I agree with those who said the safest thing you can do is teach your kids about pool safety.
Fence it, lock it up and create specific ground rules. Heck, make picture cards and post them on the fence so the kids can "read" them while they're still young.
I understand the yearly costs and questioning how much use you'll get, but it's the quality of time you'll have that matters. Think - boys can have friends at your house (you'll know they're safe), backyard swim parties, family gatherings, etc. Plus, hot summer night, kids asleep and mama with a cocktail on a floating chair.
