So I am insanely interested in having a natural birth. Both of my sisters were induced and opted for epidurals. I've done some reading and watches some documentaries and I think natural birth is for me. My question is: I'm preparing for my first prenatal appt with my obgyn. What are questions I should ask her to make sure we are on the same pg. I would like to labor in water and be able to move around through the labor. No episiotomy...etc. how did you go about this with your dr making sure she would support you?
Re: New/Questions
I would start out by saying you are hoping for a low/no intervention birth. Some questions I would ask:
What type of monitoring do you offer?
Will you encourage mother directed pushing?
How do you feel about having a doula in the room? (even if you aren't planning on having one, I think the response is telling)
What is your policy regarding IVs?
What is your recommendation for inductions if you go past your EDD?
I just posted something similar, I had a discussion with my OB late in the game because part of me thinks that nurses have the most influence in how things go in the delivery room. OB really is just there to catch the baby and make a decision if you need a c section or whether you should be induced. So of course, OB should be on board if you want a natural birth but i think even more importantly, the attending nurses should be aware too.
I think c section and epidural rates are so high because women just assume its common practice to go those routes without really understanding our choices. I always assumed we don't have choices and we have to follow our docs orders - wrong! Its our body, our baby, and we make the choices. Of course docs are medically trained and we should trust their opinion but the more we know about our bodies and labor, the more knowledge we have to make the right decisions.
