I don't know what the average is, but DD is 15 months and has been recognizing herself in pictures for a couple months now. Mirrors happened a few months ago.
I think my daughter probably started to recognize herself around 15/16 month, but couldn't say her name so I was never sure. Around 18 months she started being able to say her name so I know by then she knew. Although, if I show her a baby picture or even a picture from her 1st birthday she has no clue. She'll say "baby".
I read about a cool trick you can do to see if your baby recognizes themself in a mirror.
Dab a small dot of red lipstick on their forehead, but do it non-nonchalantly so they don't know what you are doing. If you make a big deal of it it ruins the test. Then put your baby in front of a mirror and see if they try to touch their forehead to figure out the red dot.
I did this at 12 months but my daughter didn't yet understand the baby in the mirror is her.
I think DD started recognizing herself around 14 months or so, if not earlier. I only know she could do it at that point because she moved to the toddler room ad daycare has their name and picture on their chair at the table, and she knows how to find it.
Re: Very curious to know!..google doesn't help
Edit: I had some links but I'm on my phone and it removed the dashes so links don't work... I hate the moble site!
