cost of teenage sitter

How much do you/would you pay a 12/13 y.old babysitter? I know it can vary from area to area but just curious of the going rate. I could ask her her rate but I think that up to now she has mostly watched family members and may not exactly have an asking price yet. TIA

Re: cost of teenage sitter

  • When I was that age I charged around $5-7 an hour... if there were more than 2 kids it may have gone up from that. I think that's fair since they aren't technically of working age yet and they have a small amount of experience.

Now I did have some people who thought it was OK to keep paying me that rate when I was almost 18. Needless to say, I didn't go back to babysitting for them since I was making $12-15 elsewhere!

WOW!! I got $3 an hour when I was that age!!! I've never heard of an 18 year old getting $12 to $15 an hour!! I mean...I got a decent amount if I were just there for a few hours while parents went out, but the people I babysat for that paid $3 an hour paid me for 8 hours a day Monday thru Friday.

  • I pay our college babysitter between $10 to $12 per hour depending on if he's asleep or awake the whole time. For a 13 year old I would do $7 or $8. I live in the PNW.

  • Am I the only one that thinks 12 is a bit young to leave your children with? I started to babysit when I was 15 bc no one trusted me before then and I was very responsible, an A student, acted more like a 20 yr old.

I started babysitting when I was 12 or 13 for neighbors. I think I made about $3 an hour, but this was like 25 years ago. We pay our teenage babysitter (she's 15) $7 an hour, but we live in a low cost of living area. I would consider having her younger sister (she's 12) babysit, but would probably pay her a bit less. I would only consider having the younger one babysit if I knew her parents were going to be home (they live 4 houses down from us).

  • I leave my two with my 13yo cousin and pay her $5/hour. She's fully capable and I would trust her with them as much as I would trust a 17yo. I don't think I would leave them with a 13yo I didn't know at night, though.

  • We pay college sitters $21 an hour. I would probably teenager half that.

  • When I was 12 I made about $4 or 5 per hour babysitting. But that was back when minimum wage was $4.25. Now I think it's 7.25 so I would think that 7-8 dollars per hour would be appropriate.
