Pumping at work...

For those of you who breastfeed and work what do you suggest I need to make it easy? I start back next Tuesday and I'm trying to think of how I need to pack for work...obviously the pump but I won't have a fridge to store what I pump so do I have to bring a cooler or something like that? I only have a few bottles that I can use on the pump so do I bring regular bottles to store the pumped milk or do you suggest the storage bags? Any advice would be great! Hate that I'm preparing to go back to work next week :

  • I'm going back to work in a few weeks too. :(

You can either pump into bottles, then pour into storage bags (those bags can get expensive, and if you don't pump 5oz you'll have a lot of unused space) or pump directly into the bags (I know my Medela pump/bags allow for this, not sure about other pumps).

I also bring the Medela wipes to clean the pumps parts off after rinsing them. I put 2 ice packs in my cooler and it is fine till I get home.

    Pumping sucks.

  • The pump and a cover. The first couple of times people walk by, my stomach kinda flipped even though I knew the door was locked. Its just kinda awkward. I use the Target brand bags or the Nuk brand bags and wash them in hot water at night to reuse them a few times. Also, pack a back up bag. One more of everything.. bottle, tubes, etc. Leave in your desk if possible. You never know when something is going to break. I have a Medala and bought some cheap bottles at Wal Mart that hook onto the pump just fine. I would not suggest transporting in them though since they can leak and all that hard work is in the bottom of your lunchbox.

  • I have an Ameda Purely Yours that came with a cooler bag with ice packs that fits into my pump bag. Works great. I store the full bottle, the second bottle I pour the contents of both bottles into one bottle as I disassemble from pumping and the flanges in the cooler after pumping so I dont have to wash them until I get home. I also keep a clean towel in my pump bag to wipe up any drips.

I dont worry about keeping spare parts since I can either single pump or hand express if necessary.

I also sit with my back to the door just in case someone was able to enter.

I also bring my smartphone with me to for photos of lo, and to bump and pump.

  • I have little cooler that came with my Medela pump with a big ice pack.  It keeps cool until I get home.  I use the Medela pump wipes after each session then I wash the pump parts when I get home.  The four bottles that came with my pump are enough to hold what I pump.  I also bring a hand towel to lay across my clothes on my stomach in case any milk dribbles on me.

  • I would bring two coolers one large enough for the flange and bottle set up and one for the milk. I usually poured the milk into bottles that I would send to daycare the next day and put that in one cooler. Then I kept the flanges and bottles all set up and threw them into the larger cooler like that.
