Breastfeeding

He'll nurse if he's hungry, right?

I've been concerned about LO's weight since he was about 4 months old...he dropped from the 25th percentile at 4 months to 8th percentile at 6 months. The pedi wasn't overly concerned, since he's meeting all his milestones. We've been introducing high fat solids (yogurt, cheese, avocado, etc). My issue is that a lot of the time he doesn't seem terribly interested in nursing...he's a very very fast nurser (has been since 6 wks old) and if i can get him to stay on for 5 min total I'm happy. He'll unlatch himself and I'll offer at least two or three more times, but he'll just nurse for a second or two and then pull off. It rarely feels like he's emptying my breasts (we do both sides).  When he does pull off, he's smiling and chatting...if he were still hungry, he'd nurse right? We nurse in a quiet room, so it's not like there are a ton of distractions. I guess I just need reassurance that he's not going to starve himself and that he is getting enough breastmilk from me.

  • Does your supply seem to be dwindling? How about his diaper output? Those are some indicators that your breast milk is missing the mark.

I would think that if he's happy after feeding, he's doing just fine.

  • Find out what chart your ped uses a drop like that at six months for a ebf baby on the cdc is normal. You can research who chart versus cdc breast feeding and read why.... But we had a big drop at six months and i freaked out only to find out is normal

Well it's hard to use diapers, because we are on solids as well, and he drinks water now...but he has 1 to 2 poopy diapers a day and 5 to 6 wet diapers. I don't think my supply is low, because I can pump around 3 oz right before bed (when it's at its lowest) and I can usually spray milk into his mouth while we're nursing and he's trying to unlatch. Thanks for the reassurance though!

I have read about this actually...I guess it's not so much the drop that concerns me (since the pedi wasn't concerned) but more that he doesn't seem that interested in nursing...If he were super interested in nursing but still skinny, I would assume that he had a fast metabolism. But since it SEEMS like he's not eating a ton and he's skinny, I worry that he's just not getting enough.
