Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month sleep changes

my LO is a little over 4 & 1/2 months now... he used to be a pretty great sleeper, but then right before 4 months he wakes up all the time. he used to sleep from 8-3, nurse, back down til 7... now he wakes up at 3, nurses, then wants to wake up every hour... he also wants to nurse each of those hours bc he won't take a pacifier anymore... but then his tummy gets upset from nursing so much... and i used to be able to put him down drowsy just fine but at 4 months he will not allow it.... this is the hardest sleep has ever been.

Re: 4 month sleep changes

  • This sounds like my LO. Just this weekend, he all the sudden was sleeping less and it had me worried. I hope he gets put if the phase soon:

  • It's probably the 4 month wakeful. It's pretty rough, but only lasts a few weeks. After the 4 month wakeful DD started STTN, now she's teething, so that's done.

They change all the time, in a month his schedule will change again. Good luck.

  • Yup. We've been going through it for a month now. No advice but I know how hard it is!

  • lol. At least I'm not alone! He got teeth at 3 months and another one is about to pop through so I know that's only adding to his problems... I think tonight I am just going to stop with the swaddling, too, because might as well do it while he already has problems. He's gone all night without it randomly, but other nights I just resort to it as a last hope.

We've been there for a couple weeks now. It is frustrating since DD used to sleep 12 hours straight and is now up twice again. It will pass though.

  • The 4-month wakeful wreaked havoc on our house last month! I think we're over the hump as of last week, though, thankfully! I never, ever complained about DD sleep habits (she woke every 3 - 4 hours from birth to 4 months), but when 4 months hit she was up at least every 2 hours and we were miserable! I set a deadline in my head to sleep train if things didn't improve, but thankfully, they did, with just a few days to spare and she started sleeping 5 - 7 hour stretches without any work on my part.

I think it's just a major growth/development period and their little systems just need some time to adjust.

It's the pits though - hang in there!
