Private versus DCF? Foster care

We are just beginning to gather information in MA, although we've planned on it since we met.

trying to figure out the difference between private agencies and the state? There seems to be a huge reimbursement difference as well.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Private versus DCF? Foster care

  • You mean private domestic adoption vs adoption through foster care? Or going through a foster care agency vs DCF?

If it's the former, the differences are vast. If it's the latter, a lot has to do with legal risk for the children.

sorry! Was typing one handed while baby wrangling, lol. Doing foster care through DCF versus foster care through a private agency (which still must get the referrals from DCF). I guess I don't understand why the state would pay this agency mor.

If you mean the difference doing foster care as a home certified through the state vs. an agency (here, at least) is generally the type of child you parent. In my state, the state will always place with themselves first because it is cheaper (they pay their foster parents less and don't have to pay for extra services such as extra case managers).

If the child has behavior or medical needs (or sometimes even just a sibling group that is tricky to place), they will place the children through an agency. These foster parents get paid more because it is expected they are taking the child to more appointments, dealing with more behaviors, etc. Those foster parents have the state case worker as well as an agency case worker.

I have seen others from different states talk about services being the same whether it is through the state or an agency, so you will probably need to ask someone specifically in your state.

    Good luck!

thanks, that's basically what I was thinking!
