Overstimulation

When they say your baby can be fussy because of overstimulation, what does that mean exactly?

Re: Overstimulation

  • Family wanted to go to an arcade for dinner.  Restaurant with flashing lights, noises, etc.  DD2 was 2-3 months old at the time and got over stimulated.  She didn't know where to look, what she was hearing.  She was fussy start to finish of that meal, out of her norm.  Nothing would calm her down until we left and she was back to her world again.

This. Their little brains can't process all of it.

I was told over stimulation happens when a baby is awake for too long during waking hours, for example a newborn needs to be put down for a nap before the 2 hour of awake time mark. If they are up too long between naps they become over stimulated and then cannot settle to nap and become very fussy. My kids couldn't go longer than 90 min. of awake time for the first 5 months or they would start to melt down and would not nap well.
