Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Here's a question I haven't seen before...

So DD has started doing something strange... she has been sticking her fingers in her throat and making herself gag! This behavior started out of the blue yesterday afternoon, and I had hoped she would forget about it overnight, but she's done it several times today. It's driving me crazy, and I can't figure out why she would keep doing it. I pull her hand away and give her a firm 'no', and try to distract her into doing something else, which usually works and she'll forget about it for an hour or two. I can't think of anything else to do to deter this... has anyone else their LO do something like this? I'm hoping she will just stop doing it if I keep her attention off of it for long enough. TIA!

Re: Here's a question I haven't seen before...

  • DS does it, no clue why.  I tell him no but also ignore it because I don't want to give attention to a bad behavior.  Someone told me it may happen if they are teething?  He does have one coming so who knows, between that and grinding his teeth he is making me crazy!

Yup, DD does this too.  I actually did see a question about it on here a couple months ago... made me feel better to know I'm not alone!

My LO does it occasionally if she wants something and isn't getting it... like she did it once while waiting for me to get her out of her crib (and puked that time...), a couple times in her high chair when she wanted out, and once in the car too. And it's not like I leave her in any of those places for very long.  Well, except the car seat obviously.  At first I tried a very firm "no" and took her hand out, but she laughed and did it again, so now I just ignore.  Hard sometimes, I know.  But I reallllllllly don't want it to became a habit, and she hasn't done it in awhile so I'm hoping it was just a phase.

  • LO was doing that for months on end.... I can't remember the last time I saw him intentionally do it though. Most likely it's a phase your LO will grow out of within a few months. I admit it is a bit nerve-wracking!
  • Ah!  DD was doing this for months!  She finally stopped around March.  DH and I tried the same thing by being consitent with saying no and by trying to distract her with other "tricks."

Sadly, the thing that ended it was that she caught the stomach flu from her cousins and was throwing up and gagging for days.  I think she got tired of it by then.

I hope you don't have to go down the same path we did.

  • Thanks, ladies! I had not thought about it possibly being related to teething (she is) and also, I will try to not give her as much of a reaction when she next does it. I really appreciate the insight! :-)

  • Yeah I think every kid I know mine included has done this at one point or another.

I just ignore it. She'll stop eventually.

She does it because she can basically. It's the whole "see what my body can do!" thing.

  • My now almost 4yearold son used to do this when he was 18 months to 2 years old all the time. Mostly he did it when he was in his car seat and I think he would do it to make me mad. I would scold him and occasionally he even made himself vomit all over the place. The only way he ever stopped was when I stopped reacting. It wasn't easy but I forced myself to do it and then the behavior stopped within a week or two.

  • DS does that when he gets a hair in his mouth. Maybe she's got something stuck like a hair wrapped around a tooth?? That's all I can think of, sorry!

This!  DD does it when she is teething (by accident) or is bored (to get a reaction).  we ignore her (obv after checking that she is not actually choking!) as to not feed into the "reaction" part of it.

Yes we went through this for a bit. It didn't last long, but it was weird. I hope it passes quickly for you too.

Also I love your DD's name. Mine is Elizabeth Alice. :)

  • Wow, I had no idea this was so common! I thought I just had a crazy LO. I really feel a lot better now, and I'm gonna do my best to react by not reacting, if possible!

  • my dd did that when she was little also. Its just a cause and effect stage. I notice DS bump his head cry then purposely hit it again just to feel the cause and effect. Annoying..but it will pass.

  • DS does it while DD never did that I recall.  Well, she may have briefly done it.  He has actually made himself throw up a little bit here and there.  I ignore it.  It will pass.

  • Yep, my DD does this too.  I notice she does it more often when she's teething and now that she's working on molars, it's happening more often.  I find that she thinks it's funny that she can do something to cause a reaction in mom and do something that's a new sensation to her.  Keep redirecting and ignoring and at some point she'll no longer be interested in it
