We are planning to take a big road trip with our LO in June-July. I feel like it's crazy. She will be around 3-months-old. We live in South Florida and DH has a lot of family and friends that live all around the northeast that we want to visit, plus we have a wedding in New York. It comes out cheaper for us to drive with all the places we want to go than fly and rent a car. My DH has tons of Marriott reward points so a lot of the hotel will be free.
In total we'll be traveling for around 3 weeks. We're going to start by taking 2 days to drive to the D.C. area. Then we're headed to NY, MA, NH and ME. I'm concerned with having LO in the carseat so much and if it will be too much for her. Of course we'll be stopping often to rest/feed/change diaper. I wanted to start taking her out now every day to get her used to different activities, see if that helps. Does anyone have any tips for preparing for the trip, and for the trip itself? Whether it's things we should do or things we should make sure to have, I'd appreciate any tips. TIA!
Re: Recs for big road trip with 3-month-old
On all the long road trips we've taken, I pretty much pack everything I can think of (practically my whole house) to entertain, soothe, and help my kiddos. Blankets, bottles, books, rattles, music. EVERYTHING. I sat in back with her, so if she needed something asap, I could tend to her.
On our first trip we went 6 hours over to Seattle, and DD1 was 3 months old. It ended up being a 9 hour trip, just because she had to take breaks, but most of the time she just slept.
The probably with her mostly sleeping, is when we arrived, he was a fireball of energy.
We just did a road trip to see family...LO is 4 months old. Our drive was 9 hours one way, and he slept the entire time. I thought we got really lucky, but he was so out of sorts the entire week we were visiting. He was out of his normal environment and routine, and even when we got back it took him several days to get back to his normal happy self. Maybe you could try a long weekend trip and see how baby does with that before planning a 3 week trip.
As far as what to pack...I just had diapers and toys in the car for the ride. I packed the snugabunny for him to sleep in at grandma's house, a bumbo seat, and playmat. Don't forget tylenol and gas med too.
