Early Risers & Naps

For those of you wi early risers (that's before 6am in my book), what advice do you have for shifting from one to two naps?

Since my guy wakes at 5:30, many a day, I'm having a hard time keeping him up til, let's say 11, 11:30, for one good, long nap.

Normally he's been taking a nap around 9 and another around 1/1:30. He started resisting his afternoon naps in the last month or so (sleeps 1-1/2hrs in the morning nap) and is also shortening the afternoon nap to 45 minutes. But when I tried to keep him up last week for three morning in a row he had no problem staying awake, but each day his one nap was progressively shorter--- and---here's the kicker: each morning he woke up earlier and earlier from his night sleep. By day 4 he was so exhausted at 9am I let him nap and he slept almost 2 1/2hrs.

Was that a mistake? Do I just need to let him lose sleep in the short run to organize for a good long nap in the middle of his day? What are your experiences?

Re: Early Risers & Naps

  • My guy gets up about 545, he naps at 1230ish til 3ish at daycare. At home on weekends he often takes a short 20 mins snooze around 1030 and then naps 1 to 3

  • I tend to draw a line in the sand for wakeup, so I would probably start with pushing the wake up time a little later.  (6 is my line in the sand).  Pushing wakeup takes a lot of dedication, but if you don't have some kind of line, wakeup tends to move earlier and earlier.  Early wakeup usually results from and in being overtired, which is why pushing the naps pushed wakeup even earlier.

Once the early rising issue is sorted, I'd work on moving naps later slowly.  Like 15 minutes later at a time.
