Green Poop

So my LO is turning 4 months Friday of this week.  EBF She is starting her 4th week in Daycare.  For the last 3 weeks her poop has been green.  We didn't feed her many bottles until she started daycare.  I didn't know if this is her digestive system changing...foremilk/hindmilk issue?  She eats off of one side until she either falls asleep or she just stops.  I start on the same side that she finished on before and then switch.  She goes 3 hours in btwn bottles at daycare and sleeps 7-9 hrs straight at night.  That is why I don't know if it is an issue with the milk that I pump not having enough of the hindmilk, but again I pump until the milk stops flowing and they swirl the bottle to get the fatty top layer in there?

Anyone else have this issue?   She does a BM at least 1 time a day, and it is green and a thick watery consistency.

Re: Green Poop

  • My pediatrician told me the color has to do with how quickly they digest the milk. Green poop means it went through their system qucicker. So perhaps your LOs digestion is just sped up a little? As long as they seem ok otherwise I would assume all is well, but if you have concerns call the doctor and see what they say.

     Hope this helped some.

  • My lc said it was hind milk but not a bad thing.

  • My LOs pediatrician said its based off what  eat. So if I eat more vegis stuff like that it'll be green. She said not to worry unless it's mucusy then it might be something (not serious though)

  • Dd started having green poops suddenly around 3 months old, and then about 3 weeks later I noticed some blood too (easy to miss too). Docs felt it was a dairy/soy sensitivity which apparently can suddenly start around that age. I cut out all dairy and soy and our yellow poops are back. I wasn't as great with completely cutting soy and ate  a lot of soy sauce a few days back and we had bad green poops again, so for us I really do think that's the cause. If the green poops do come back though, I'm not prepared to cut more than that out of my diet and ped said that's fine as she will eventually tolerate it again and outgrow this.

  • It can also be from too much saliva. If your LO has been drooling a lot more which happens around this age that's probably it. It happens with teething too because of the drool.
