3rd Trimester

Hemorrhoid problems....

Ok so I have really really bad external hemorrhoids...I've been eating a lot of fiber and my doc prescribed procto foam but nothing is working....these things burn, itch and are extremely painful...the only thing that makes them better is sitting in a warm bath....but I can't do that all day....

I only have a few weeks left but any help or suggestions you can provide would be awesome!!!!!!

Re: Hemorrhoid problems....

  • I'm with you and I feel your pain...literally.  They're horrible.  I've had 3 so far this pregnancy and even though at times they don't bother me, I can still feel it when I wipe.  I would imagine I'll have one still at the time of delivery, so it'll only get worse from there.  Here's what I do with mine:  Tucks pads w/ Witch Hazel...they help.  And cream.  I've had Tucks cream and Prep H cream, no difference really.  They both work the same and even though you have to apply it all day long and it's messy, it helps ease the burning.  I also sit in Epsom salt baths.  And after delivery, I remember laying the Tucks pads inside my butt cheeks for relief.  You have a gigantic pad on anyways to help keep them in place.  GL...to all of us hemorrhoid sufferers.

Sorry ladies.  They are awful!  I had 4 that needed to be surgically removed a week after my c/s.  Things that help/suggestions from my surgeon:

    1.  Get a prescription from your OB for Proctosol-HC 2.5%.  It's a cream (so not greasy), stronger than Prep H and not nearly as messy.  I bet you could call your OB and have them call it in for you.

    2.  Warm baths or sitz baths 2x a day for 15 minutes each.

    3.  If they really hurt you can get them lanced.  I've had this done 3x (once while pregnant) and, while it's uncomfortable and embarrassing, it helps!  My PCP does this for me but I think not all PCPs will.

    4. Take stool softeners!  Don't make the mistake of thinking just one a day will help. I have to take 3 a day for them to really help. I think you can take up to 5/day.

I hope you all feel better soon. Let me tell you, you DO NOT want surgery for these. Mine were so bad, though, and were past the lancing stage that I begged for relief and it was WAY worse than the c/s. However, it's better than not being able to sit, stand, lay down comfortably.   I will say, too, that even though LO gave me the worst 'roids ever, she was so worth it.  Big Smile

  • Urgh, I'm right there with you.  What a pain.

I had pretty bad hemerrhoids from my last delivery, but they shrank and basically went away, except a few flare ups every now and then.

I had THE WORST constipation in first tri, and amazingly had no problems with them.... And then about a month ago, I had one slightly hard movement, and suddenly have these terrible ones.  Blegh.

Lets all hope they go away afterwards. :(

Is the surgery different from the lancing?

Ob lanced mine and removed a clot recently and it was so painful...but worth it after about a week.  Also  it is risky close to delivery bc you can tear open again.  I also got the hydroc. Cream and it helps a bit.  Definitely call your ob and ask for that.   I also started miralax.

Yes, when they lance them they just make a small incision and squeeze out the clot that is making you hurt so much. Worth it but still uncomfortable for a day or two after. With the surgery they cut the problem ones out completely. If you think it hurts to poop now! You will also curse the surgeon for 2-4 weeks after ....then you will want to send a thank you gift. :)
  • Thanks for all the tips.... It truly hurts to sit at this point...guess its a good thing I'm on bed rest b/c I can lay down all day....sits baths are awesome...if I could just sitin the tub all day I'd be happy ;) i go back to doc Friday for my 36 wk so ill see if the have any other suggestions as the procto foam worked but its $60 and only has 10 applicants....not willing to spend that again....I had them with my first child but they were not this bad.....I have 4 externals...and I swear they keep getting bigger ;(
