1st Trimester

asking HR about FMLA

I'm only 6-7 weeks but, I want to learn the policies at my job about maternity leave but, don't want to tell anyone that I am pregnant yet. Is this safe to do?

When are you planning to tell your job?

Re: asking HR about FMLA

  • FMLA isn't pregnancy specific so you can absolutely ask about.  But if you're looking to find out about all your leave options (like short term disability, potentially any literal maternity leave, etc) you'll have to dig around for an employee handbook or your HR website if you have one.

  • I don't really have much advice, as I've been wondering the same thing.  Currently, I'm planning to wait until beginning of 2nd tri or very close, just cause I don't want to have to "untell" anyone @ work should something bad happen.  I figure that is plenty of time to figure out leave and everything, so not too concerned about waiting a little bit longer.

I work in HR, FMLA is a federal act that all employers with more than 50 employees must follow. FMLA provides 12 weeks of job protection, as long as you've worked at least 1,250 hours in the last 12 months. If you want specific information about your companies policy regarding personal or sick time use, your company should have an employee manual to refer, or you can talk to a member of HR and just say you're thinking about it and want to know the policy you don't have to tell them you already are!

    Good luck!

Also, a good thing to know about FMLA, is that if your doctor approves you for intermittent FMLA (let's say 4 days/month), but you discover that you need more than that or that you just have to take all of it at once, you don't have to get new paperwork filled out.  At least from what I've experienced with my old job and with my husband when he had it for me.  The approval for however much time is a guideline for the employer to know roughly what to expect.
