Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Food suggestions?

So my LO LOVES her purrees - she'll eat almost anything (green beans and mangos seem to be consistently not her favs...) anyway..

We give her bites of our food and she loves almost anything (Including avacado chunks from gauc that I had tried to "suck off" the spiciness but not sure how much I did.. so flavors are good!)

Here's my issue - she seems to be ready for more "real foods" but I'm at a loss.. and she doesn't hold food on her own (crackers, puffs, even teething biscuits are hit and miss) - She will hold french fries (lord help me! I try to suck off the salt and 90% of the time we are at home and they were baked and often sweet potatoes) - What other foods are your Los eating on their own or even in chunks?  A lot of the food we eat is spicier then I think she would like - or hard to chew (like steak) and since she isn't hold pieces and "biting" chunks I worry about choking her with say a piece of chicken..

Help me :)  (I know its probably very obvious)

  • Bananas and pancakes seem to be working out the best for us. LO loves both and does really well.

  • Bananas are a big hit for DD. Also steamed carrots, avocado wedges, peaches.

  • Humm.. does your LO hold them?  - Banana I tried recently and she just looked at me like - you want me to touch that?

Oh peaches.. I canned a bunch of peaches those would be the right softness!

Carrots she's kind of hit and miss on.. but I'll try again..

What about toast cut into strips? Or scrambled eggs...

  • I have tried the toast.. we just tried eggs (off a spoon) this weekend and they were a hit - so maybe I'll try that.. and beans / rice - though she's never picked up anything small and put it in her mouth.. sigh. one day right?

  • We steam broccoli, cut the stems a little longer and it makes a good handle.

With banana we cut a small section off, then peel only part of it so the rest of the peel works as a handle. (someone on our BMB posted a picture and it works so great!) Like this

    Homemade tortilla

    Apple slices

    Grilled/roasted zucchini sticks

  • My DS has just started wanting more finger foods and less pures, too! I baked a sweet potato and cut the meat of it into chunks for him. I also roasted some squash and zucchini in small chunks. Avocado, banana, watermelon. I think I will try pancakes and toast soon like other posters, too!

This is the way we do banana. DD LOOOOOVES it.

  • Have you looked at any of the baby led weaning stuff? I know you started with purees but reading the BLW book or checking out the website may give you more confidence with real food and help you understand gagging vs. choking.

So far at seven months dd has eaten just about everything we eat. We give her large strips of meat and finger sized fruits and veggies, toast, cheese, etc. She loves spicy food including Mexican, Thai, and Indian. Salt and honey are the only two things I avoid...except of course sweets and processed foods.

I have found chicken the be the easiest meat for her to actually eat since it is a bit stringy but she loves sucking the juices out of a piece of steak.

Have fun! Solids are so much fun!!!

    Edited to add banana story.

Dd loves most food but she won't touch bananas. She seams to hate the texture and gives me the same I'm not touching that look! Ripe whole peaches and plums have been a big hit recently, I just take the first bite and she does the rest.
