Babies: 0 - 3 Months

weight loss after cesarean

Hello. 4 weeks ago I gave birth to my DS Nicolas by c section. I am recovering well and more importantly, the baby is doing great! I went to get a checkup they weighed me. I was disappointed to learn I'm only 15lbs down since delivering him...especially because he was 9lbs. It is driving me crazy not to exercise yet and I am breastfeeding so my calorie loss at this point is mainly from nursing him.
My question is am I losing too slowly? Am I over thinking it? I gained a little less than forty lbs. Anyone who can share experience or just give encouragement? Hope everyone is recovering well and that all these LOs are happy and healthy too

Re: weight loss after cesarean

  • I also had  a c-section a little over a month ago. My dr. said to take walks around the block with LO. So I have been doing that a few times a day just to get some kind of exercise. Hopefully at my 6 week appt the dr. will give me the OK to go back to the gym :) Good luck girl :)

  • With DD1 I gained around 50 lbs.  It took a long time to lose the weight.  I still had those annoying 5 pounds to lose when I got pg with DD2.

It takes time, so don't worry.  If you can get outside and walk, do that until you can truly work out.

  • With DS1 I gained about 20 lbs and lost the weight within a couple of weeks PP, however it took quite a few months before my belly looked normal again. This time I gained 45 lbs (oops) and have lost about 25 in these first few weeks. But I still can't quite fit into my larger sized jeans because of the stretched out skin. I'm hoping to get some nice weather soon so I can get out and walk, otherwise any real exercise will have to wait until I'm cleared at the 6 week PP check. Give it some time, but remember it takes many months to gain that weight and several months for everything to get back to its place!

ETA, I had a c/s both times and had that "shelf" left both times and that's what took the longest to go away.

  • You're over thinking it :) Just eat healthy, go for a short walk until you're cleared for more activity and your body will do the rest!
FWIW, the pounds didn't start coming off for me until about 4 weeks PP and I FF.

  • I had a csection in Nov. I gained 43 pounds, lost 26 pounds in the first 2 weeks then was at a complete standstill until about 8 weeks when I got the ok to workout again.  I'm down another 5 and LO is now 13 weeks. It's really tough to not have lost it all by now, but you need to have patience with it ( I have a hard time remembering that yet). Hang in there you'll lose it, but it definitely takes time.
  • With my 1st it took four months for me to fit into all of my clothes again from pre-pregnancy. I remember losing 15 lbs of weight right away and then there was a good chunk of time where I was in a stand still and the weight would not drop. Once you can exercise more and consistently breastfeed the weight loss will happen. In the meantime, enjoy every minute of that little guy.... They grow up too fast!
  • I think everyone loses at their own pace.  For me personally, I gained 33lbs while pregnant.  After my C-section, I lost 15 lbs within the first couple weeks then it really slowed down.  In addition to breastfeeding, I started eating very healthy and going to the gym around 6 weeks and I was back to my pre pregnancy weight by 11 weeks.

Try not to put to much pressure on yourself.  Maybe start out by looking at your diet and going for walks (as much as you feel comfortable doing).  You will lose the weight eventually.  Hang in there!
