XP: Morning feeding question

Hi ladies, quick question for you all, do you give LO a bottle/BF first thing in the morning when they wake up? We have been waking LO up, changing her and feeding her but recently she has struggled finishing a 6 oz bottle. I am wondering if it takes her a bit after waking up to get hungry. I was curious if we should start giving her breakfast (usually yogurt) first and then a bottle a couple of hours later?

She is almost 11 months old and we are trying to give her 24 oz of formula/day in 4-6 oz bottles. Also wondering if/how we should start weaning her?

Any thoughts or experiences you have to share would be helpful. TIA!

Re: XP: Morning feeding question

  • My DD doesn't want a bottle until about 1030-11 am. If I give it earlier she might drink 2oz max. So I dropped the early morning bottle and give it about 2 hours after breakfast and she polishes it off.

  • I don't give DS a bottle as soon as he wakes up. On days he goes to daycare, he has breakfast when he gets there then a bottle. So this is normally an hour and a half after he wakes up. He definitely needs time to "wake up" before he's hungry.

ETA As for weaning, I'm just kinda going by DS. I've definitely noticed he drinks less ounces per day now but I haven't really been keeping track. He usually has 4 bottles a day now but the amount of ounces varies.

  • She would totally take a bottle first thing in the morning, but I'm actively trying to wean her off of them. She doesn't get her first bottle until right before her first nap. Her breakfast usually satisfies her enough.

DS wakes up to nurse around 5am then goes back to sleep until 7, sometimes 8. When he wakes up then, we do breakfast. He doesn't nurse again until his nap at 12pm. Then at 7pm. Plus another 1 or 2 times through the night.

  • I'm glad you posted this and I'm curious to where other babies are at with this. DS had been refusing his bottles in the morning when he wakes up. He would drink maybe 2 oz and start crying. Maybe he is ready to drop the morning bottle.
  • DD pretty much will only take a morning and night bottle any more.  For all intents and purposes, she's dropped all of her other bottles, although I still offer one mid-day.

In your situation, I would probably just start feeding breakfast and offer milk/formula/BM in a sippy with breakfast.

  • We do an 8oz bottle when she wake up around 8am and when she finished that she will still have a yogurt and a little blueberry pancake. I really need to start weaning bottles but haven't tried yet!

  • We feed LO breakfast about 30 minutes after she wakes up, this way she has time to wake up and play a minute. She takes a bottle about an hour later when she goes down for a nap, but it's only about 3-4 oz. Enough to relax her to fall asleep.

DS still nurses A lot! Still every 2-3 hours..

I change her first thing and then she nurses. She would flip out if I tried to do anything else before she got some boob.

This! She gets up for the day at 6am, if I try to change her diaper before nursing she flips out

  • DS used to nurse around 6:30 and then sleep again until 7:30 or 8:00. He wouldn't be interested in nursing again until around 9:30. But lately he's been sleeping until 8:30 (still after a 6:30 nursing) and wanting to nurse again when he wakes up. Then again, he's working on his top two teeth and wants to nurse all the time anyway.

This. DS wakes up between 5 and 6 a.m. to nurse. This is his longest and biggest milk feed of the day. He nurses again just before his nap, again when he wakes up around 2:30 p.m. and finally just before bed at 7 p.m. He used to nurse 1-2 times during the night, but I've weaned him off of night feeds.

Thank you all for your responses, they were so helpful. We are going to start by reducing her 2 mid-day bottles in hopes of consolidating them soon. If she continues to have problems finishing her morning bottle we will try breakfast first then a bottle a little while later. She did great this morning with no fussing to finish so hopefully the past few days were just a fluke, not feeling 100% or the heat. Thanks again!
