Baby Stroller City Mini Question (XP)

Hi... I posted this on baby gear too but I'm not sure how much traffic that board gets, so here goes...

I'm going on a trip abroad for 2 weeks with my (will be) 23 month old. I currently have a BOB jogger (it's a BEAST of a stroller and not compact at all) and the Chicco travel system stroller.

I really would like a city mini because it seems so easy to fold up with one hand and it seems lightweight, which would be nice for travel. Also, it seems like it will have good maneuverability on city streets.

My question: what's with the different models? I see them on craigslist for $150 and up, but I've seen them at Target for $200 (https://www.target.com/p/baby-jogger-city-micro-stroller/-/A-14180854 ) and I see that BRU has one that's $350 (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12546357&searchURL=true )... what's the difference, in your experience?

Also, are there better options out there for what I want? I want to be able to fit the diaper bag under it, and I'd love a cupholder. Those are really the only "features" that I really like.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Re: Baby Stroller City Mini Question (XP)

  • The one your looking at at bru is the gt, it has all terrain tires... The one at target it the micro...the regular city mini would be great for your trip I looooooove mine I'm pretty sure they all function the same it just depends what your budget/all terrain needs are..

  • I love our cm and it works great for travel, however I could not fit a diaper bag underneath. I usually just bring what I need in my messenger style diaper bag. You'll probably get better feedback on the Gear board.

  • I love my City Mini but wouldn't take it to Europe.  We lived in Germany and traveled quite often with DS1 and found it much easier to wear him in the Ergo than to deal with a stroller.  I would take an umbrella stroller if anything.  DS1 loved to walk on his own at that age and would ride in the stroller for a short period of time before completely freaking out.  We rotated between him riding in the Ergo or him walking.

If you insist on a City Mini I would go for the GT with the all terrain wheels because it will be the smoothest ride over cobblestone.  Also, know that it doesn't come with a cupholder (separate accessory for parent and baby) and a diaper bag will likely not fit underneath (the basket is pretty small).

We have the City Mini GT and I love it, but if we were going on an oversees trip (or really any trip where we'd be walking and DS would be in the stroller a lot and in and out of museums, etc.), I would probably want something a tad smaller.  I think pp sugestions about the all terrain tires on cobblestone is definitely something to consider, but the GT feels like it would be a tad bulky for airplane travel and maybe a tad too big for what I imagine are smaller sidewalks, tighter stores/restaurants, etc. oversees.  BUT, don't get a cheapo umbrella stroller. We have the First Years Jet (for things like quick ins and outs of restaurants, doctor visits) but it would be horrible to take on a trip.  It just doesn't maneuver all that well and has virtually no canopy.  If I had to buy another stroller for an oversees trip, I would definitely look at the City Mini.  If you can see them all in person and test the way the feel - pushing and size wise and if you can fit your diaper bag underneath -  it might be a good idea.

I have a City Mini GT.  I LOVE it, but in your situation I would say it's not your best option because it is a bit wider (2ish inches I believe) that the regular City Mini, and has bigger wheels, which is good for rougher terrain, but not so good for compactness.  I also don't think the extra $ for a GT would be worth it for you.

I would recommend either the regular City Mini, or the micro if you want something a bit bigger than an umbrella stroller.  They do maneuver amazingly well, and fold like a dream.  So easy to use.  Or, I would look into a nicer umbrella stroller... it probably won't ride as well as a CM, but it would be smaller.

Also, the City Mini's do not come with a cup holder (I bought a cup holder + 2 little storage compartments that attach to the handle bar as an add-on) and it can be annoying to put a diaper bag under it/get it back out.  It can be done, but it depends on the shape of the bag, etc.  The size/accessibility of the basket is my one complaint about the City Mini's.

  • Honestly, I would probably *not* take the City Mini on an international trip. Yes, it's smaller/lighter than a BOB stroller and the one-handed fold is very convenient...but it's still rather big and heavy compared to a true umbrella stroller. If you're traveling internationally to a city, it would be difficult to carry it, your bag and your toddler up/down stairs (since many hotels, subway systems, etc, do not have escalators or elevators).

I have a City Mini and am considering a First Years Jet or Ignite for an upcoming trip. Much smaller and lighter.
