First time I was semi-emergency c/s, so I was constant.
Second time I was a VBAC. I had to hook up to the monitors once an hour until I got my epidural. I walked the halls, and did what I wanted to get labor going.

I was continuous, but I was at 7cm when I got there and begging for an epi from the second I hit the door. When we took the birthing class at the hospital, the nurse said that if it's important to you to make sure the doctor writes "intermittent monitoring ok" or something like that in your records ahead of time.

I think constant but I didn't really care. I delivered fairly quick though.
