It really depends on where you live and if you're paying taxes. I live in your general area and when I had a nanny we paid $350 a week for 40 hours for a live out nanny. There were some nannies that wanted more and some were ok with that amount. It was what we could afford at the time (it was 3 years ago).
Holy shyt! In Boston we pay $18/hr plus health care for a nanny, and that's the standard! We're a high cost of living city but now I see just how high it is! I work 4 days, and the cost takes 100% of my after-tax income. But I love my job and day care doesn't work for us, so it it's a wash for now... Hopefully I'll climb the ladder and it will be a non-issue soon, or get laid off and a non-issue for a different reason!
I just read a WSJ article that nannies are one of the first things to go in a down economy so you should feel comfortable negotiating salary--it will be hard for nannies to find jobs in the next year or two. GL
