Adoption

Book ideas

My Aunt and Uncle are adopting soon from Ethiopia.  I am wanting to put together a basket of books for the baby.  Do you have any suggestions?

Re: Book ideas

  • That is a really nice idea! I found this online shop that I know has a ton of nice adoption gifts.  Good luck!

  • Thanks!  I am looking now.  There are some wonderful ideas!
  • My very favorite parent-to-child book ever is "Just in case you ever wonder" by Max Lucado.  I bought it for my BFF's daughter when she was born and for my DD when she was born.  It's the parent "talking" to the child and just confirming their unconditional love and that they'll always be there for them.  It's awesome.

I also just bought DD "Tell me again about the night I was born" by Jamie Lee Curtis for her birthday.  I don't love EVERYTHING about the book -- has some adoption stereotype kind of stuff in it -- but I like that it's a cute story and every kid wonders about when they were born.  If nothing else, I figure it would be a good conversation starter for when she's older and wants to ask questions about her birth.

I've also heard great things about "A blessing from above" (don't know the author).  I think it's one of those cheapy Little Golden books.

Another good adoption-related book is called "I love you like crazy cakes."  This sits on a special shelf in DD's room... I'd have to look at it for the author's name.  It's about international adoption (China) and I personally love the fact that they discuss (briefly) the child's bio parents, and that the a-mom had tears for the b-mom and wanted her to know her baby was safe and loved.

I could go on and on... we like books in this house.  :)
