Gag Reflex issue?

Hello ladies! My LO will be 8 months this week, and is doing great with solids, but she's getting annoyed with purees/me feeding her--she just wants to feed herself!  The only problem is, every time we give her something that doesn't melt in her mouth (like an itty bitty piece of fruit or chicken) she eats it happily, then throws up within a few seconds.  Is this just a gag reflex issue?  She only has two teeth, but I know babies with no teeth who handle solids better.  What am I doing wrong?

Re: Gag Reflex issue?

  • Have you tried bigger finger foods? If the itty bitty pieces are giving her issues, try something she can hold on to and will have to bite or suck pieces off instead. If she is just swallowing the small foods, I can see how a gag reflex would be causing vomit.

I started with Mum Mums since they melted and then give her sticks of baked sweet potatoes, avocado, banana, etc. They were all mushy enough for her to not need to do any actual chewing, but gave her a little room to eat at her own pace. GL!

  • She loooooves Mum Mums and the yogurt drops.  Sticks are a great idea!  She loves sweet potatoes, so I will have to try that.  Thanks so much!
