Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Should I move baby to her own bed?

My LO is 4 months old and up until a week or so ago we have been cosleeping. We chose to cosleep because it was the best way for me to get decent sleep. I'm a very light sleeper so I was never afraid that I'd hurt her or not hear her wake to eat.

Lately she tosses and turns so much and when I get up to feed her she isn't very interested in eating anyway. As soon as I lay back down next to her she starts tossing and turning. My DH gets up with her at 5 am and he said every morning he takes her out into the living room and as soon as she is laying by herself she passes right out and sleeps soundly til about 8 am.

Before this she was sleeping about 8 pm to 5 am. Now she tosses and wakes herself up multiple times through the night.

I'm wondering if she is just ready to sleep in her own bed and is restless at night because my movements wake her?

I would say, yes, it's time. You both will probably sleep better.

  • You could always give it a try and see how it goes.  We moved DD to her crib around 8 weeks and we ALL slept better at that point.

After she was about 4 months old, I noticed that when she was done nursing, she would wiggle and toss around on the boppy a lot (but I could tell she was trying to go to sleep).  When I lay her in the crib now, she squirms for a few seconds to get herself into a comfortable position, and then drifts off.

It's very possible that she just needs her own space :)

  • It definitely sounds like she's ready for her own bed. My kids all slept with me for a few weeks then started sleeping poorly and did better in their own bed with room to stretch and kick.
